Book Review: A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's WorldAuthor: John Stonestreet and Brett KunkleFormat: HardbackTopic: Christian LivingScope: Contemporary Living and Influence in the CulturePurpose: To equip Christian leaders, parents, and students with the tools to successfully navigate the culture. This means they will be able to flourish as Christians even when much of the culture seems to be against them.Structure: The book is separated into four sections.1. Why Culture Matters. This section defines culture and gives reasons why Christians should care about culture and what happens in it. (Chapter 1. What Culture Is and What It Does to Us, 2. Keeping the Moment and the Story Straight, and 3. A Vision of Success).2. A Read of the Cultural Waters. Here the authors explain some of the underlying trends in our current culture and how we should think about them. (Chapter 4. The Information Age, 5. Identity After Christianity, 6. Being Alone Together, and 7. Castrated Gelding and Perpetual Adolescence)3. Pounding Cultural Waves. These are the individual things that are *trending* in our culture right now. In other words, a lot of this is about what people argue about on social media. (Chapter 8. Pornography, 9. The Hookup Culture, 10. Sexual Orientation, 11. Gender Identity, 12. Affluence and Consumerism, 13. Addiction, 14. Entertainment, and 15. Racial Tension)4. Christian Worldview Essentials. This section finishes the book with essential skills/tools needed for Christians to prepare themselves to engage and mold the culture. (Chapter 16. How to Read the Bible, 17. Why to Trust the Bible, 18. The Right Kind of Pluralism, 19. Taking the Gospel to the Culture)What it does well: *This book defines and explains culture well. Culture is something we all think we know, but is incredibly difficult to explain. Stonestreet and Kunkle navigate this obstacle commendably. In defining and explaining their view of culture they enable the reader to understand their prescriptions throughout the book.*This book is not full of alarmism. Many books of this type from similar sorts of authors are pessimistic and "sky is falling" tomes. This is not true here. Throughout the work the authors do not shy away from pointing out what they think is going wrong in the culture, but there is always an undertone of hope. In fact, the hope they have often moves from being an undertone to downright, in your face hope. It was incredibly refreshing to read a book on culture by Christians that wasn't condemning of the culture. Instead they want to redeem and restore it.*The authors avoid being overly partisan. It is clear these authors are conservative both theologically and politically. However, they are quick to criticize some sacred cows of their own camp. Two examples come quickly to mind. First, in the chapter on racism they are quite critical of the common conservative retort "All lives matter" to the Black lives matter movement. Stonestreet and Kunkle rightly explain that "yes, all lives matter-including preborn ones-but we ought not give the impression that we aren't carefully listening to the concerns of those specific fellow image bearers who believe their value is being dismissed"-290. Another example is when the authors attack much of the method people use for reading the Bible. They rightly criticize reading the Bible by wrenching verses, stories, and even whole books from their context. It is not a magic book and we should spend time actually reading and studying it, not finding prooftexts for our pet issues.*Also, this book is hugely practical. This should go without saying because the title is A Practical Guide to Culture. However, this book has its finger on the pulse of culture in ways many similar books attempt but never reach. Stonestreet and Kunkle give "action steps" for everything they write about.*Lastly (though there is a lot more done well), this book is permeated with scripture. It almost oozes with scripture. There are at least 164 direct references to scripture and many more indirect references. This was very nice because it would have been easy to write this book without the counsel of scripture. However, the authors were not content with the easy job. They wanted to show they have wrestled with this subject in light of God's word.*There is a lot more that is done well, but to explain more is beyond the scope of this review. What it lacks: *This book is not as nuanced as Niebuhr's Christ and Culture or Carson's Christ and Culture Revisited nor as academic as Myer's Understanding the Culture, but to be fair it isn't meant to be. This is a practical guide to culture and it reads that way.*One thing I have a small problem with is the discussion of "calling" at the very end of the book. The authors define calling in a common way that I wrestle with. They see calling as the intersection where our vocation and our worship or mission are most effective and most gratifying. Now, I would hope people are effective in their mission and gratified in their work, however, I am not sure this is the biblical definition of calling. As I read the Bible, it looks like we all have the same calling and we can fulfill that calling in any place as long as it isn't inherently sinful. Also, the authors quote Frederick Buechner in saying (in a roundabout manner) that it is unlikely we are fulfilling our mission and worship if our "work is writing TV deodorant commercials." Now the authors may not agree with Buechner wholesale here, but I think it is entirely possible to write deodorant commercials for God's glory. Some quick highlights: "Too many Christians have a tendency to react to what is loudest and noisiest in our culture, which often means overreacting to what isn't ultimately important and underreacting to what is."-21"...culture's greatest influence is in what it presents as being normal. Clearly, not all that seems normal ought to be, but what is left unexamined is also left unchallenged."-28"Culture tends to shape us most deeply by what it presents as normal. We are creatures of cultural habit. Our loves, our longings, our loyalties, and our labors can become products of the liturgies our culture imposes. We live according to them but rarely think through them. Unintentionally, we become culture shaped rather than intentional about shaping culture."-39"Telling us 'That's bad, so stay away' didn't work"-42"Asking 'Where do I draw the line?'-called the line approach to culture-is too simplistic to be helpful. First, not everything labeled Christian is good, and not everything labeled secular is bad. Much that is labeled Christian-movies, songs, leaders, schools, churches, ministries, and organizations-fails to reach basic levels of excellence and honesty. And much that is labeled secular accurately portrays fallen humanity, displays artistic genius, and brings good to the world. As Gregory Thornbury, the president of The King's College, is fond of saying, ''Christian' is the greatest of all possible nouns and lamest of all possible adjectives.' It's meant to describe a person, not a thing."-45"We often think of compromise when it comes to beliefs and behaviors, but a particularly subtle temptation is to compromise in our methods."-70"The ignore-controversial-subjects-and-they'll-go-away approach to raising kids won't do. In the information age, plenty of voices are willing to talk with our kids if we aren't."-82-83"The issue of trust is complicated only if kids think that so-called Christian authorities are untrustworthy."-83"...if we don't know whom it is we are educating and whom they should become, education devolves into a disconnected hodgepodge of classes, skill acquisition, test taking, activities, and degrees. Now think of fashion, business, public policy, health care, biomedical ethics, or even youth groups. We won't know what to do in these areas if we aren't first clear on who humans are. And it's clear we aren't clear about that."-102"Instruction is necessary, of course, but discipleship happens not when we talk at our kids but when we walk with them through their struggles to a place of commitment."-110"Our kids learn their tech habits from us."-120"In many ways, adolescence is now-and this must not be missed-the goal of our culture. Somewhere along the way, we ceased to be a culture where kids aspire to be adults, and we became a culture where adults aspire to be kids, or at least adolescents, forever."-133"Rules can provide wise and appropriate boundaries, but following rules shouldn't be confused with Christian maturity. Rules can't show us the heart of a person. While rules may help limit the bad influences and temptations 'out there' they leave unaddressed the problems 'in here,' in the human heart."-138"Can we Christians stop not talking about sex, please? For too long, we've let other voices direct and dominate the cultural conversation on sex. Much of the church's contribution has been to shout 'Don't do it!' from the margins of society. We've given the impression that Christianity has a negative view of sex. But God's story offers so much more than a simple no to unsanctioned sex. For every prohibition, there is a beautiful, life-giving yes!"-173-174"The goal for Christians isn't to be blind to color but to embrace the distinctive qualities and uniqueness of God's image bearers."-290"Rather than reject God's exclusive plan, we should be grateful in the way a diseased patient rejoices when a cure is found. The redemption and restoration we have through the exclusive means of Jesus' death and resurrection are cause for celebration. That's why it's called the gospel-it's good news."-327Recommendation?: I highly recommend this book. Stonestreet and Kunkle have clearly explained their view of how Christians can navigate in today's culture. They do this by advocating to challenge and influence the culture, not by withdrawal or wholesale acceptance of culture. This is a book that is useful for anyone who cares about their own influence or their kid's spirituality. I can only hope that it is updated every few years to keep up with the issues in the culture of the time.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that makes me want to buy a whole case and give a copy to everyone I meet. A Practical Guide to Culture is that book. In it, John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle pull no punches and shy away from no topics in their effort to help parents walk their kids through a secular culture that has become empty of meaning. In fact, after I had read about four chapters, I sent an email out to several friends who are parents of teenagers and young adults. I asked if they'd like to read through it together and meet weekly to discuss each chapter. That's how impressed I am with this book, and how important I think it is.The book begins with a very helpful definition of what culture is, how it is formed, how it forms us, and why it is so important. It then goes on to define “the Big Story of reality," the Scriptures, which describe reality as it really is. Cultural mindsets shift, but reality doesn't change. As Stonestreet and Kunkle put it, "One might refuse to believe in gravity, but stubbornness doesn't change truthfulness." The Scriptures are like gravity—they are true whether or not we believe them. This lays the groundwork to get into some hot-button topics like homosexuality, transgenderism, pornography, "hook-up culture," consumerism, addiction, entertainment, and racial tension. These subjects are all treated with biblical clarity and compassion. Rounding out the book is an accessible and practical description of the Christian worldview, “the Big Story of reality." We can only live biblically in our culture if we understand how to read the Bible and how its message contrasts with the worldview of those around us.When they say this is a "practical" guide to culture, they aren't kidding. The book is laid out with easy-to-read informative sections, and each chapter ends with action steps and discussion questions. This is a perfect book to read and discuss with your teen or young adult. In fact, I would say it's imperative. This will empower you as a parent to initiate conversations with your kids about everything they will face in culture. Don't miss this important book!

This book gives an excellent guide and overview for Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Biblical manuscripts. It provides illustrations of the scripts and examples of illuminated pages of many of the well known books of that period. It gives the reader a sense of the period as well as its place in time. It reveals the sheer artistry as well as the dedication of the individuals who produced these great works of art' This book also provides a wide sampling of this milieu which allos one to have view of both the similarities and the differences in this form of religious scholarly and artistic endeavor. This book is a real addition to anyone's library and is a lovely keepsake.

This book is part of a fairly series of titles on Manuscript illumination published by George Brazziller in the US, at least some titles were published in the UK by Thames and Hudson. They have helpful introductions written by experts at the time. There is a 1-2 page bibliography and there is no indexThe book contains a number of world famous illuminated manuscripts from the periodIn this volume there are the "the Book of Durrow" ,"the Gospels of Saint Willibrand" "The Durham gospel 1 and 2"The Book of Lindisfarnre" " the Gospels of St Chad". "The Trier Gospels" " The Canterbury Codex Aureus" and "The book of Kells"This list is incomplete but lists most Manuscripts in the volume. Most manuscripts have two or more illustrations- several quite a few moreThis is a good book on Manuscripts from an earlier generation and is still well worth considering. The illustrations are in colour and are very good by the standard of the time. The text related to the illustrations is well written

This book features forty eight color plates that are reproduced in high quality paper from original manuscripts from the seventh and centuries. The author, Carl Nordenfalk, provides a historical background and commentry on each of the plates. The author 's style of writing lends itself well to one not overly knowledgeable of the subject matter. The manuscripts are taken from the Gospel Books which were richly ornate, having almost talismanic qualities having been produced in the native art style of the Celts and Anglo- Saxons as the Christian missionaries were proselytizing in the Bristish Isles. Most of the manuscripts come from the Book of Lindisfarne, the Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells. The manuscripts feature portraits of various Christian messengers such as Saint Luke, Saint John, Saint Chad and biblical figures such as King David, Madonna and Christ. There are also pages of the written word from the various gospels shown in the rich decorative style of the Celts. The looping interlocked letters and motiffs are an amazing contribution to civilization that everyone can enjoy from these ancient, partialy intact codex. The symbols and strange animation create symetrical patterns that are highly imaginative and will astound the viewer with it's complex primitivism. The intrinsic beauty and composition is sometimes in stark contrast to the flatness of the figures. You can literally get lost in the patterns, there are endless oblong patterns of scrollwork, tied together by knots, interwoven and intertwined animals stretching out and connecting to fancy letters or other motiffs that will dazzle your senses. This is a great book to gaze upon and reassure yourself of the beautiful beyond that has inspired many centuries of art work. The book also provides a complete list of color and black and white plates and a selected bibliography for future reference. This is a great book to look at anytime, especially in those tranquil moments of peace and reflection. Recommended for anyone interested in book illumination, Christian art and the similarities between Celtic art from this period and Byzantine and Italian art and the inspiration of the Gospel.

This book is more of an overview of several books than focused on one in particular, but still nice for the plates and a good sampler if you're not sure what to get. The title of this book is not misleading if you know anything about the history of Celtic art and it's later years in illumination, from my experience as a reviewer for the British Museum's publications and having worked in Ireland on archaeology digs as their sketch artist. ;-) During the Christian era of Celtic art they did have many influences of Coptic, Greek, Norse, *and* Persian design, especially in the Book of Kells. The Irish monks did quite a lot of travel during the dark ages to promote learning, and the monastaries in Ireland had students from countries all over the world, hence a good influx of other ideas which they of course fused into their own (masters of adaptation!). "The Old Philosopher"'s desire for Ogham to be used in the manuscripts is very far off... the latin uncial used in the manuscripts is standard for the period, as the ancients Celts (pre-Christianity) didn't have books per sae, only a sort of "runic" writing system of slashes used on staves and stone. They *had* no manuscripts so expecting to see Ogham in a manuscipt would be ridiculous! I think "The Old Philosopher" misunderstands the period of Celtic history these books were created in, as the title is certainly reflective for the period listed. If you enjoy Celtic manuscripts such as the Book of Kells or Lindisfarne Gospels this will be a nice overview of some of the different evolutionary flavors the artwork went through. If you want more information on Celtic art then any book by Ruth and Vincent Megaw (such as "Celtic Art", available from Amazon as well) will cover the early periods (typically only up to the Christian era, or briefly entering the Christian era), and then any book published on the old manuscritps such as the Book of Durrow, Lindisfarne Gospels, and the Book of Kells are great. This book is more an overview of a bunch of books, so good for starting out your manuscript collection.

My Life Among the Indians by George Catlin a true life adventure. Catlin, a nineteenth century artist and explorer, braved the wildsof the Americas to paint the disappearing indigenous tribal people and their worlds. In exchange, they sent him gifts that formed an important collection he loaned to museums to be shown with his portraits. Tribes called Catlin Te-hee-pe-nee Washed: The Great White Medicine. This new 2017 edition of My Life Among the Indians is illustrated with Catlin’s artwork from this period. If you resonate with America's most checkered history, this book is for you.

My Life Among The Indians is an amazing account of George Catlin’s adventures - he who spent many years researching the lives of indigenous tribal Indians of America. This particular edition is beautifully illustrated with Catlin’s own artwork - which alone makes it well worth buying. It was a thoroughly fascinating read, providing a good dose of culture and history. Loved it.

I throughly enjoyed reading this memoir, I felt as if I were traveling along with the writer. His descriptions were so vivid with all the colors.I had a real sense of awe as I read along with his travels.I would recommend this memoir to anyone curious about the Indians of North and South America.

I learned a lot about the native Americans of the new USA. How could they be so gracious to people who took their land?

I gave this author and his book five stars because it's very interesting and eye opening. This is one book that would be a great addition to your library

My Life Among The Indians is a fascinating read. I’d never heard of George Catlin. ‘Fascinating man’ is putting it mildly. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about him and his talents.

Great depiction of a man out in the wilderness. Really got a feel for who George Catlin was because of the admiration showed him. Excellent read.

Chose this book as a whim . but wasn't sorry or disappointed . north and south america Indians. Culture of theirs

This book has just been published, and I received the Kindle version tonight. Since my 97 year old mother with Alzheimer's and aphasia moved in with us 5 years ago, I have spent many hours almost every night researching the disease and trying to find a way to help her. During the 5 years my mother has been with us, we had a lot of ups and downs. The downs were caused by problems, like Shingles in her eye, that were not in our control. When she came to live with us, she was very much overweight (4' 10" at 185 lbs.), was totally incontinent, was on 10 drugs for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc, couldn't read or write, and couldn't walk on her own. Within 9 months, she was taking a natural supplement for thyroid and all other prescription drugs had been eliminated. She became totally continent and was walking to go to the bathroom on her own. She started reading flash cards that we got for her and started writing. Her weight loss was gradual, but, now, 5 years later, she weighs about 115 lbs. and has gone from a size 2X to size 6. When we had her last blood work done, the doctor told us that she had the blood work of a 20 year old, and she was perfectly healthy. Unfortunately, her mental capacity has been reduced in the last 5 years. So, I had hopes that this book would offer something I hadn't already found in my extensive research that would help me to help her.First of all, this book suggests extensive testing that most doctors won't do on a regular basis in order to find out levels of components in the blood that help to determine possible supplements or dietary changes that may help. Most of this I already know, but it would be helpful for someone that has not had time to do the research. Basic physical exams generally don't include the necessary tests, and you often have to request that specific test should be done. For example, the test for thyroid is usually only the test for TSH which is produced by the pituitary gland, but this is a result of the T3 and T4 that stimulates the thyroid hormone (TSH). TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in response to the T3 and T4. So measurement of the TSH does not give an accurate measure of the function of the thyroid.Other than extensive blood testing, this book suggests dietary changes. Many of the dietary suggestions I completely agree with, but some I do not. The author does mention the importance of eating meat, chicken, and eggs only from grass fed and grass finished animals, and consuming only wild-caught fish that are not harvested as large fish because of the risk of contaminants. He also mentions avoiding GMO foods and processed foods. For my family, all of this is a way of life. Although this has helped my mother to improve in the past, it definitely has not reversed her Alzheimer's.One area that I do not at all agree with Dr. Bredesen on is the avoidance of gluten. I think this subject needs some expansion and an explanation of modern day store bread. Whole grains have been consumed for centuries with no adverse affects of gluten. The problem come in with the modern day processing of the grains. Gluten is a part of grains that must be developed in order for it to be digestible. This requires a long fermentation process to release the nutrients of the grain. The long fermentation releases the phytase in the grain that destroys the phytates. This is true for any seed type food such as rice, beans, etc. For breads, long fermentation greatly reduces the requirement for yeast and the addition of vital wheat gluten. Modern store bread making requires a large quantity of bread to be made in a short time. Instead of developing the gluten with a fermentation of 18-24 hours, bread can be made much faster by adding 4 times the yeast and vital wheat gluten. This makes a nice fluffy loaf that you can roll into a ball of paste that would stick to a wall, but it's not anything your body can digest or use. So, I don't believe that gluten is the problem, but more so the processing of the grains that make the flour. In addition, most store breads are made from flours that have been stripped of every nutrient in the grains. I, personally, make all of our bread and mill the flour from whole grains. This book does give some guidelines for supplements that might be helpful, but you need to know what deficiencies you are dealing with, and this gets back to blood work that your doctor will do. If you don't know about deficiencies, using supplements is guesswork and can do more harm than good. This book does supply some good ground work for someone that hasn't had time to do the research, but it definitely does no supply an end-all cure for Alzheimer's.UPDATE 09/13/18:I wrote my initial review of this book a little over a year ago, and have come to the conclusion, that dementia, a form of Alzheimer's can definitely be slowed down, but I don't think it can be cured at this point. Diet is definitely a key point and some supplements are helpful. In the last year, my mother has lost more of her mobility, but we still try to make her walk as much as we can. So often, difficulty in walking causes caretakers to resort to a wheelchair, but doing this results in taking away a capability that should be encouraged. Without some exercise, the possibility of blood clots increases and muscles atrophy. Caretaking is definitely not easy for anyone doing it, but the easiest route of care is not often the best for the patient. My Mom is now 98 and had lost some physical capabilities, but we still encourage her to try. We know that taking the easier methods for us will be detrimental for her. Diet is very important in slowing dementia, but physical and mental support is just as important.

My mother, and roommate, has frontal lobe dementia and, they believe, Alzheimers. Watching her decline has been heart wrenching, and I'm constantly trying to find ways to make her life better. I worry not only about Mom, but about myself. I believe that I am on the same path.I first heard of the Bredesen Protocal last winter, when Maria Shriver discussed it on the Today Show. I quickly researched it as much as possible, but info was limited. I had a feeling a book was forthcoming, so I anxiously awaited it's release. I was worried The End of Alzheimer's would contain too much technical information that I might not be able to understand. I was very happy to see that it was written in a casual format that intentionally makes it easier for the rest of us. The details are clear, the tone is casual, and it's easy to follow. As I read through this book, I was surprised by how many points were familiar to me. That's me! I do that! Oh heck! It was as enlightening as it was scary. Living with Mom, I also live in fear because I know I'm on the same path she struggles down every day. That's my future. On page 97, Bredesen says "How to give yourself Alzheimer's. Live your life in a way that keeps your brain supplied with as many as possible of the 36 factors that influence whether APP gets cut into the destructive quartet or the beneficial duo. How to prevent it. Live your life in a way that minimizes the number of the 36 inducing factors in your brain." Those 36 factors are clearly laid out and I believe they are not difficult to control.Several years ago, I struggled with brain fog and often had difficulty remembering numbers for even a couple of minutes. I also was overweight and had heart problems. I reached a point where I thought I would die, so I wrote my will and made plans for my dogs after I was gone. Then I said enough was enough, and I dramatically changed my lifestyle. I cut out processed foods, ate lots and LOTS of vegetables and fresh fruits, especially leafy greens and berries. I ate wild caught fish, but no other animal products. My diet was low in grains. I used the USDA Super Tracker to make sure that my diet exceeded the RDA for every nutrient they tracked. There's a lot more to it, but I was eating all the time and I exercised every single day. Within a few weeks, I had much more energy. Within a few months, my brain was on FIRE! But then...I started a new job and everything about my lifestyle and schedule changed. Long story short, I fell back into old habits, abandoned my perfect diet and exercise program, and gradually regained weight. I also started losing clarity and life became more difficult. I recognize that. And I know that I alone can change that.I'm so very glad to have read the Bredesen Protocol because I know now, more than ever, the importance of getting back on track. I am making a serious effort to change my future. I believe this book can help. I have already marked my calendar and plan to follow up on this review in 3 months and again in six months. Mom may be too far along, I don't know, but it's worth trying for both of us. Dr. Bredesen states in the book that his protocol may not work for frontal lobe and other types of dementias. It has only been tested on Alzheimers. I feel that it's still very important to heed his advice, as Alzheimers often doesn't get a definite diagnosis until after death.
