This author is an excellent writer that does a very good job of simplifying and explaining the very complex situation/conditions which arose at the Bolsheviks established their regime. I was mainly interested in the sections on the civil war, and while Pipes' account is fairly high-level, it is very well-written and provides an excellent overview of the civil war. This book is probably a bit dated at this point (the hard cover book came out in 1994), but I'm not aware of anything of a comparable scope with a more recent vintage.

Dr. Richard Pipes is the Baird Professor of History at Harvard University. Pipes is a much published and revered expert on the Soviet Union. "Russia Under the Boshevik Regime" is the third volume in his trilogy on Russia. The other two books are"Russia Under the Old Regime" and "The Russian Revolution." Pipes gives the reader thousands of pages to assess the rise to power of the Bolsheviks under Lenin. The cruel totalitarian society which emerges from this material makes Western readers shiver with man's inhumanity to man and how cruelty, greed and the quest for power dominated a great but tragic country. Pipes book is 514 small printed pages in which is learned:a. The true horror and mass slaughter which occurred during the Russian Civil War in the aftermath of World War I. The Bolsheviks had murdered Czar Nicholas II and made a separate peace with Germany. The White were led by Admiral Kolchak and General Denison. Their purpose was to overthrow the Soviets. They were greatly outnumbered by the Soviet forces who won the war.b. The Bolsheviks under Lenin were a party of intellectual atheistic radicals whose chief purpose was the possession of power. They cared nothing about the peasantry (80%) of Russia's population. They instituted mass murder and the population starved in the worst European famine since the Black Death. Millions died from hunger, murder and disease.c. Stalin and Trotsky fought over Lenin's empty seat. The cruel Stalin defeated Trotksy. Trotsky was murdered in Mexico in 1940 by a Soviet agent. Millons would die in the great Stalin purges of the 1930s. Russia suffered millions of casualties in World War II against Germany.d.The Reds defeated several large peasant revolts to hold on to their power base.e. Cultural activities such as painting, music, drama, opera and literary output was strictly under the control of the repressive Communist Party regime.f. Lenin's efforts to interest powerful Western nations to follow Communist teaching in France, Germany, Great Britain and the United States was largely a failed effort.g. The Communist government had many affnities with the repressive czarist regime hich had ruled Russia for three hundred years.h. The Soviet Union was made up of many ethnic and religious groups who had no sense of loyalty to the Moscow government. This lack of common religion, language and loyalty would lead to the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1989.i. The Communist government was atheistic and overtly hostile to religion from anti-semitism pograms to persecution and murder of Russian Orthodox believers, Roman Catholics and Muslims.j. The Nazis and Fascists movement studied Communism and used many of its lessons on how to run a dictatorship. Dr. Pipes magisterial volume reads like an excellent textbok. It is lavishly illustrated; includes a glossary of useful Russian words and includes copious notes. It is not an easy or light read but for anyone who wishes to see Communism revealed in all its garishly brutal and cruel reality will not want to miss reading it from start to finish! Excellent and essential to the scholar of Communism.

A stark and depressing portrayal but exposing the Bolsheviks for what they were is imperative for history.

You can't beat Richard Pipes for dealing out the information in a clear, organized way. He cuts nobody any slack--Bolsheviks are criminals and that's that. For students of the Revolution this book is essential.

well written and very readable. explains a lot about the development of the Russian psyche.

extremely well written, a very complicated history and lots to absorb. great for history buffs

This book is so comprehensive - and so readable. I could not put it down. Nothing will ever beat Richard Pipes and his books on history of Russia & USSR......

Having just read Richard Pipes' trilogy on the buildup and development of the Russian Revolution, I highly recommend them all and thoroughly enjoyed this closing edition. I certainly hope that Mr. Pipes continues the series into the Stalin era at some point.

Monotype: Mediums and Methods for Painterly Printmaking

From Library Journal

The first printmakers were cave people who painted their hands and slapped them against cave walls. Today, printmakers like Ayres still use methods nearly as simple. Others, like printmaker and painter Welden, have created completely new processes, like his solarplate method. Monotypes, the subject of Ayres's book, are created by applying oil- or water-based paint to a flat plate. By pressing a dampened sheet of paper to the plate, a single print is made. The earliest such prints go back to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, around 1640. Later, Degas and Gauguin experimented with the method. Today, there is a virtual explosion of new ways to create monotypes. Ayres explores the work of a variety of such artists, who demonstrate imaging techniques, masks, stencils, collage, and mixed-media prints. The results vary from traditional images to eccentric, colorful fantasies. In 1972, Welden discovered that polymer printers' plates could be used in printmaking by exposing them to the sun. Draw on a transparency, place it over the plate, expose it to the sun, and the plate is, in effect, etched for printing. The method is now widely used, and Welden and Muir have produced the first book on this extremely versatile art. Both books are highly recommended. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I agree with the previous reviews - if you're creating monoprints, and particularly if you're looking for non-toxic methods, this is a great book. It's full color with many inspiring illustrations, and full of useful, practical information written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner.Re. recommended paints: I recently had the pleasure of taking a monoprinting class with Julia Ayres and her daughter Gail Ayres (at the Art Methods & Materials Show in Pasadena, CA, Oct 2004). The Ayres now recommend using the new Akua-Kolor waterbased inks by Rostow & Jung ([...]) which I assume were not invented at the time this book was originally printed. The advantage is that these inks are non-toxic, clean up easily, and they stay moist for days. You then print to DRY printmaking paper, and the inks dry instantly once they hit the paper. Now you don't have to worry about the inks drying on the plate, or handling fragile, wet paper. (I shoved my Createx paints in a bottom drawer after the workshop!)(If you get the opportunity, take a class with the Ayres if you're just getting started, as there's nothing quite like seeing the process in action and the book will make even more sense! They also teach using the PinPress Roller for making monoprints by hand; very useful if you don't have access to an expensive printing press.)

I bought this book early this summer while taking an intensive one-month course in monotype printmaking at my local community college. It is one of the best art instruction books I have ever seen. It is comprehensive, clearly written, and filled with superlative photos, both of the printmaking process and of the types of art created by the many different methods presented. Most of the photos are in color. The volume is very sturdy and will last for years. The author is a very talented artist herself, and the book includes not only her own work and that of some of the earlier practitioners of these methods, but also works by many outstanding contemporary artists. For anyone interested in learning more about these many exciting means of making art, the book is a highly worthwhile investment and an excellent complement to any course or workshop.

This book gives a thorough overview of Monotype printing. It starts out with materials needed, then goes on to talk about hand transfers, press transfers and doing monotypes in acrylic, watercolor, oil and printmaking inks. It covers mixed media and stencils, masks, etc. It has much practical/useful information in each section on both techniques and materials. There are examples of each type of work covered, athough I would have liked to see a larger "gallery" of work by different artist. A very good book if you are interested in monotypes.

To report this is a fabulous book in great condition.

I ordered this book after watching the DVD by the same name. There is a wealth of information in this book and on her DVD but the book has so much more detail. I am not a painter but I found that the techniques are quite adaptable to my area of dyeing with thickened Procion MX dyes. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to expand their knowledge of surface design regardless of the medium employed.

If you are considering monoprinting I highlyrecommend this book. It informs about thestate of the art techniques & materials, and shows many examples whichwill inspire you. My one criticism:The artistic quality of about 75% of the art ispoor to bad. Its annoying, but doesn'taffect the book's usefulness.

I realized how much I needed to own this book and bought it. It is a wonderfully informative resource. I use this by my side as I work and try out new Monotype techniques, which I have just started to do these past several months. A greatly informative book, well-written and illustrated.

This book has so much more than others I have read on the subject. I was creatively stuck in my ongoing Monotype workshop and this book freed up my creativity and love for the medium again. Excellent.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Justyce is an African American teen caught between two worlds. He knows that the education he's receiving at a private school will grant him more economic opportunities, however he begins to question the effects his private school education on his own identity. Some of his classmates believe that the racial pendulum has swung too far, giving African Americans an unfair advantage over their white counterparts. The kids he grew up with believe Justyce has assimilated too much and has forgotten where he came from. He questions his blackness, his relationship with his biracial girlfriend, and his attraction to his white debate partner Sarah Jane. Through a series of journal entries, Justyce attempts to figure out his place in the world by exploring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. A violent altercation between a retired white police officer and his best friend causes Justyce to examine what it means to be an African American male in 2017. The length and pace of this well-written story make it a perfect read for reluctant and sophisticated readers alike. The main characters are well balanced and will resonate with teens. However, the voice of African American women is largely absent from the narrative. The characterization of Justyce's mother and his girlfriend are one-dimensional compared to some of the other protagonists. Still, this important work should be read alongside Jason Reynolds's and Brendan Kiely's All-American Boys and Kekla Magoon's How It Went Down. VERDICT An good choice for school and public libraries.—Desiree Thomas, Worthington Library, OH

I was a very quiet kid, someone who watched and listened, tried to understand why people were the way they were, made the choices they did—good and bad. To this day, when I happen to see a photo of someone who stood up so faithfully for what they believed in, clinging to the hope that things could improve if they just kept chipping away with their voice and actions, I reflexively place my hand on their image as if it could somehow connect me to them. As if it could somehow tug me closer to understanding how they persevered. As if it could somehow allow them to give me advice on what was stirring in my heart as I watched and listened to the world around me.In this novel, Justyce McAllister—a bright, motivated, top-of-his class student—takes it one step further. As he navigates a contemporary Atlanta where he is still seen more for the color of his skin than the content of his character, he regularly writes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a journal, hoping that it will help him put Dr. King’s teachings into practice in order to manage everything that’s thrown at him.I don’t want to give away the exact situations he faces, but I will say this: there is a safety in fiction that allows us to witness and begin to understand the harder stories and truths we flinch from in real life. Books like this get important views considered, get important conversations started. As a white person, I needed to get to know Justyce, for I’ve never been in his shoes, and the fact is that his fictional shoes are worn by millions today. As a mother to white children, I needed to own this book in order to place it into my kids’ hands and ensure the messages inside it are nailed home. Over and over again, until things do get better.I highly recommend this book, and hope it gets into as many hands and hearts as possible.

A lot of discussion points in a small package.Dear Martin follows Justyce who is a black teen boy who goes on a journey of discovering the hardships of being a black male.I must say I am impressed with the many topics this book covers from racial profiling, affirmative action, going along with racist jokes and more. Dear Martin would be a perfect book for a high school class because of the topics it discusses, the engaging story and the short length.Personally, just like The Hate U Give, Dear Martin was hard to read. My children are black and it’s frustrating & heartbreaking to know the issues presented in the book is reality for many black men and for my sons as they get older. The idea that they’ll deal with racism solely because of their skin color guts me and the possibility of someone harming them because of it, I can’t even think about it.Thank you Nic Stone for writing a piece of literature that I hope helps many people see problems of today and revisit how they think.Issues: My main issues with the book were structural. 1. It was short, just over 200 pages. I heard it originally was longer but cut shorter to make it more impactful. I wish there had been a little more development here. 2. The structure and formatting of the book threw me a little. The majority of the book is written in a regular formatting but then randomly dialogue is formatted in a bullet point style. I thought it was a mistake at first. It was interesting but I’m not sure I was sold on it. I did also like the letters written to Dr. King.Overall: This was an important read. Please read it

Okay, so I'm going to get this out of the way first. If you've read DEAR MARTIN, read THE HATE YOU GIVE. If you've read THE HATE YOU GIVE, read DEAR MARTIN. If you recommend THE HATE YOU GIVE, recommend DEAR MARTIN too. These books talk to each other. I'm not going to compare them because that's not what this review is about--I'll leave that to someone else.DEAR MARTIN is a lightning fast read--and it's structurally neat with like almost play-like dialogue exchanges--and it's telling a heartbreaking and important and hard-to-look-away-from story. I love Jus. He's a wonderful character. His mom is so real, and his teacher Doc is awesome. And his friends are people I want to know. No spoilers, but this to say, I wasn't expecting the plot of this book to go the way it did: that is, the novel itself wasn't predictable.Although, yeah, of course, I was expecting it too go where it did--since this book is exactly what's happening in the US right now.All in all, an amazing read that everyone, and I mean everyone should read. But also, the story and characters are so real that there's pleasure in reading this book too.I cannot wait for Nic Stone's next book.
