First, let me state the obvious - since Kuhn is talking about the philosophy of science, this is not light reading. That said, this book is as relevant as it was when it was first published - perhaps more so. Kuhn makes a well-reasoned argument that science is not an objective search for "truth," as many people believe. Instead, "normal science" is a problem solving endeavor, solving known problems by known methods. Science only changes the rules by which it operates (its "paradigm" - that over-used and often misused term in contemporary language) only when the current paradigm causes more problems than it solves. This is the real answer to any from any field who say, "The science is settled. There is no room for discussion." Those who make that statement need to re-read Kuhn and come to grips with the reality that all knowledge is inevitably socially constructed. If you read this in graduate school, it is worth revisiting. If you have never read it and you are ready for some deep thinking, dive in. You will find your horizons expanded, and that is a good thing.

I found Thomas Kuhn's book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" very much a test to get past. Ordinarily, if a book doesn't keep my attention, or I think that it hard to peruse after the initial couple of pages, I surrender. Kuhn explores this in great detail, and I found it fascinating and insightful.For example, prior to the invention of the telescope, the celestial sphere was viewed as fundamentally different from the earthly sphere. But a simple look at the moon in Galileo's telescope reveals it to be a body that is very similar to the Earth. It has mountains which cast shadows as the light moves across them, and so on.The "moon" must now be be viewed as a rather different concept, and this new conception is invoked every time one looks at it. This new "paradigm" affects other observations, such as those of Jupiter and Saturn. They are not pure, static points of light like stars, and some color and a circular shape can be see with the new telescope. Must they be bodies like that of the Moon or Earth as well?In the book, as Kuhn presents his analysis, it seems we are also taking a deep look at epistemology, and the subtleties and differences between how something is perceived and how it is conceived. Grounded in the historical narrative of scientific advancement, I found this investigation of those difficult and elusive topics to be more enlightening than usual.I believe that some criticize Kuhn for how sharp and discontinuous he describes his paradigm shifts to be (although I haven't looked at this closely yet, I may be mistaken). For me, this was not a main point. I enjoyed his detailed analysis of how paradigms change in general, and why this is a more accurate description of how science progresses, compared to additive models.

This is not a book that can be read leisurely. It takes full concentration, and to be honest, I’m not sure that I caught everything. What I did catch about the theory of paradigm change and scientific revolutions was interesting. I like when he went in to the examples of different aspects of scientific revolutions in history (perhaps because those were the only concrete things he talked about). I understand that the successive steps that lead to scientific revolution and paradigm change. What I don’t understand is the relevancy. I know that he mentions how scientific textbooks present the history of a science as linear and building towards and end goal. He mentions that there probably is no end-goal—no final, perfect truth. Does this matter to a scientist, solving “normal” science puzzles? (I guess that’s an unfair question to ask anything involving philosophy.) I wish I could have read this when it came out, and what Kuhn was claiming was revolutionary itself.

I was looking for a good introduction to learning attic and koine Greek and selected Jones' book as my place to start.The good: It's a pretty gentle introduction, many other similar books I've looked at are more eager to hurl the student into the deep end. The book does not require previous knowledge of Latin, as some texts do. Jones supplies the answers to all of his exercises, so it is more appropriate for self-teaching than other books.The bad: Jones cuts some corners with the language to make it easier on the student. He also doesn't provide detailed explanations as to what's going on with the underpinnings of the language. For example, he doesn't explain how "middle" verbs are situated between active and passive forms, which I think would promote understanding. Also, some of the translations early in the book rely so heavily on vocabulary and forms not yet learned that they're not all that useful. This gets a bit better as the book progresses, but even at the end of the book the reader isn't equipped with everything they need to attack confidently most new testament passages and certainly not for most of the classics.The indifferent: As other reviewers have pointed out, some of the author's jokes are a bit ribald. I'd rate them as PG-13. If you're looking for a text to teach a ten year old, I could understand wanting to find a different text, but for anyone in the mid-teens, if they can't handle Jones' jokes, they need to get out more. Another reviewer was disappointed that Jones didn't provide translations of the biblical passages, but there are plenty of free sources online that will serve just fine. Jones doesn't explain the literary convention of accenting classic Greek. Can a Greek student manage without this knowledge? Yes. Except in specific cases which Jones points out, you can mostly get along fine without them. However, for various reasons accents are considered to be an integral part of classic Greek, so truly serious students will probably feel like they have a gap in their knowledge that needs to be filled.So, this is a decent, fairly gentle introduction to classic Greek that is suitable for self-learning. It's not sufficient to get to the point where the learner is really translating significant Greek passages, and such a student will have gaps, but it can be a reasonable starting point before students learning on their own transition to a more rigorous second beginning text.

Fantastic learning material for Ancient Greek. The author does an amazing job of presenting a vastly different language in an easy and enjoyable manner. Quite honestly, learning beginners Greek was easier than Spanish due to how well this was written.The short chapters are broken up into various sections such as: Presenting a verb form, irregularity, vocabulary, exercises and then a brief overview of some culture pertaining to Ancient Greece in addition to some quirky comic image. To make it even better once you get roughly half way through the author picks parts of plays, historical texts and more for you to translate with what you know.Unlike some other language-learning materials out there, there's answers at the back of every chapter so even though you should try your best to not look at them until you think you're nearly or completely correct, you are never left scratching your head wondering if your right or totally off.The author's sense of humor and thoughtful layout make this probably the absolute best option out there for Beginner-low intermediate Greek. The only bad thing is you have to go to someone else afterwards!

For any student of Greek using American grammars and textbooks and considering purchasing Peter Jones' Learn Ancient Greek, be aware that this a British text and uses a different order for listing the cases. Noun tables follow the order Nom, Voc, Acc, Gen, Dat in contrast to the U.S.: Nom, Gen. Dat, Acc, Voc. If this doesn't bother you, you may find the book useful as a refresher. Jones uses humor, which sometimes is funny and sometimes not.

_Learn Ancient Greek_ is a solid primer to Attic Greek. However, I offer one caveat: the book is considerably easier for those who have some prior experience with language. (More on that later.)Jones does a remarkable job in getting readers comfortable and confident with Greek, translating simple passages by the end of Chapter Two. His humor is a bit dry, but the lessons are solid and build off each other very well. A CD is offered for those who are concerned with pronunciation (I am only interested in reading Greek, but its nice to have it offered).With that said, I would not recommend this book to those who have no experience with language - Greek gets complicated (as Jones points out relatively early on; to his credit, the exceptions to the rules and the grammar itself are very well explained). While Jones provides some clarification of what grammar is (with humor, thankfully) and how it works, I can't imagine getting further than the first few chapters without prior language experience to draw upon. Hence the four stars.For autodidacts, Hellenophiles, or those seeking to fill gaps in their education, I highly recommend this book. By the end of the book you will be translating excerpts from Homer and the Bible, and have an excellent foundation for further formal study.

In his Learn Ancient Greek, P.V. Jones has succeeded in offering both an enjoyable read and an effective self-teaching tool. Those looking for a 1930s discussion of adverbial phrases should save their money as this book actually does what it purports to do--it allows the dedicated reader to learn ancient Greek in an enjoyable, interesting and relaxed manner while, most importantly, promoting understanding and retention. I have a dozen Greek grammars and none is better than this. Rather than providing long lists to memorize, Jones promotes the only truly effective manner of learning any language--written exercise and repetition. Buy this book. You will not regret the choice.

I highly recommend it. Giggles and guffaws rule, peppered with tears and sage nods at the pearls of wisdom that one uncovers in the pages.The book contains foul language and graphic descriptions not suitable for children.

Too tame.

Even thoug I was initially taken by surprise by the size of the book, it odes deliver what it promises± top quality photos of models in bikini and an occassional model even topless!

I have seen a lot of beautiful girls, and can truly tell that this book is something special. All the girls are so hot and I'm surprised at how many pages this book has.If you just want to have some beautiful girls to look at or you need some inspiration why you should get better with women, this is definitely the book. Trust me you will love it and it will be well worth your money.5 stars.

The only complaint about this is that the book is not available in a bigger format. The pictures are really great and the girls are amazing. I have brought 3 bikini books but this one is the best.

The women here are hot don't get me wrong, my only major complaint is NOT enough butt shots and not enough "full length" shots. I love womens sexy legs and butt, and for me there wasn't enough. I truly dislike half of the body shots.

With a title such as "Data Mining in Finance: Advances in Relational and Hybrid Methods", one can think that this book is a set of research papers in this topic. However, it is not the case. The authors, Kovalerchuk and Vityaev, have written more than 300 pages about applying data mining techniques in finance.Although the main topic of the book is relational data mining and its financial applications, there are several other topics such as statistical models, autoregression models, neural networks, decision trees, naive Bayes and fuzzy logic. There are also three other interesting chapters in the book. First, the introduction explains both the data mining (existing techniques) and the financial fields (technical and fundamental analysis). Second, a chapter about application of relational data mining to finance. Third, a chapter with comparison of techniques presented in the book. It can be noted that the foreword is written by Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro from KDnuggets.An advantage of the book is that both finance and data mining concepts are explained. Thus, one can read the book without the need of other resources. Before applying a given technique, the authors describe it, explain the data as well as the financial application need. Maybe more attention should have been paid to results and their explanations. They are sometimes confusing and lack some descriptions. Also the book is a little old now (2000) and due to this, one can be disappointed not to see SVM for example. Who knows, maybe in a next edition of the book. Finally, although not up to date, this book should be read by anybody applying data mining in finance.

This is one of the most informative books I've found on the subject of mathematical modeling of financial time series. The book is largely a review of the 'state of the art' and frequently expects the reader to be familiar with or willing to 'find and read' relevant articles, but we can all do that, can't we?The book sequentially studies1. Standard ARIMA (autoregressive models) which are closest to familiar linear regression techniques.2. Neural nets and Bayesian trees (as a category called 'relational data mining' by the authors)3. Fuzzy logic approaches (described as 'membership functions'. Membership functions are defined in terms of linguistic practice, whatever that is.).In this way, the authors develop a seemingly comprehensive outline of the field, describing fields of study in terms of increasing abstraction. Of the three, I found the fuzzy logic discussion the most interesting.I have to express some reservations regarding the perspective taken by the authors. Their view is that of the Newtonian physicist observing the interactions of bodies entirely independent of the viewer. At no point do the authors examine the implication of 'self participation' in the marketplace. For example, what happens to probability distribution 'X' when a trading entity uses the probability distribution 'X' to take a significant position in a security? If this seems interesting, you might try looking at "Theory of Financial Risks: From Statistical Physics to Risk Management", by Bouchaud or "An Introduction to Econophysics: Correlations and Complexity in Finance" by Mantegna and Stanley.

An interesting book even if the focus on finance on data mining put the reader always at the border line with some very usual statistics techniques. A favorite hymn in our house, my kids sincerely love this book.

Absolutely love the photos!!!!

We love our copy of this book. From my now 3 year old all the way up to my 10 year old, they all enjoy the beautiful and meaningful illustrations and singing along as they read through. Because we see its value so much for our own family (as well as the other books from this publisher!), I continue buying more and more copies to give as gifts!

These books are a beautiful way to further study the hymns of the church with our children.
