From Publishers Weekly

More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. Our brains and beings are wired to learn deeply and easily via stories, and this splendid collection of 108 Buddhist-based tales proves the point with lasting, gentle, pervasive teachings. Brahm, a former Cambridge University theoretical physics scholar, was ordained in Bangkok at age 23 and spent nine subsequent years in forest meditation under Venerable Ajahn Chah. He is now an abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. In the dozen compelling and practical sections on topics like perfection, love, commitment, fear, pain, anger, forgiveness, happiness, freedom and humility, he weaves a long, rich tapestry of understanding using short threads of stories only a couple of pages long. Many tales lead one to the other, but each also stands alone. Resurrecting several "chestnuts" as well as crafting new stories, Brahm avoids the pitfall of esoteric, inscrutable renderings sometimes found in Buddhist writing. Instead, without compromising integrity, he favors modern cadences and references (e.g., iPods and the World Wildlife Fund) to make the stories sail along. Especially resonant if slowly savored, this is a wonderful collection that can be enjoyed by a broad audience. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review

"One of The Best Spiritual Books of 2005... Entertaining and spiritually edifying; the author has a fine sense of humor and these tales are sure to speak to your condition. While savoring them, we realized that the author has given it everything that he has, and the end result is a volume brimming with humor, humanity, and good will." (Spirituality and Health / Spirituality and Practice)"Ajahn Brahm spins a good yarn--108 of them here--drawing on teaching stories he heard as a student of Ajahn Chah, one of the great masters of the Thai forest tradition, and on personal anecdotes from his more than thirty years as a Buddhist monk. Ajahn Brahm is originally from London, and his working-class humor and cockney turns of phrase can be charming. Between the classical Buddhist stories and the homespun advice, you'll get a good sense of who this teacher is, and why so many people are drawn to hear him speak about Theravada Buddhism." (Shambhala Sun)"More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. (Publishers Weekly)"Masterly storytelling and Dharma teaching, beautifully and effectively combined. The tales are at times hilarious, at times poignant; often both." (Larry Rosenberg, Senior Teacher, Insight Meditation Center and Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, and author of Breath by Breath)"This is a book that is destined to become dog-earred and cherished and read aloud to one's friends and family. It will fall apart from your attention, I promise you! It's crammed with pithy, modern 'Buddhist Tales of Happiness' that cleverly relate the wisdom of Buddha's teachings in a poignant, funny, and profound way." (Mandala)"Ajahn Brahm is one teacher one can never be bored listening to. His talks on Buddhism in Malaysia and Singapore have always attracted record crowds. Newcomers to Buddhism are always fascinated by how he easily he is able to explain difficult concepts in ordinary language the mind can grasp. [He has become] the great storyteller...What we have here is a collection of 108 stories and anecdotes comprising the best of Ajahn Brahm's inspirational tales. ...Many stories in this volume are true-to-life tales that help us to develop a deeper understanding of mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom. Indeed, after reading the book, I believe we will all open the doors of our hearts to more goodness, kindness, and happiness." (Eastern Horizon)"Ajahn Brahm follows in the widespread tradition of turning to stories--some folk tales, some personal experiences--to teach life's most important lessons. What's remarkable about this collection is that whether he is relating a tale about painful emotions, difficult relationships (including with ourselves), or even going through airport security, he touches on the universals of human experience with wisdom and wit so that we may confront our foibles with disarmingly gentle humor." (Jean Smith, author of NOW!, and editor of 365 Zen)"Ajahn Brahm is a happy, wise and inspiring man. My Mum, a devout Anglican, says Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung? is so good she takes it to bed with her each night!" (Rachel Green, communication specialist and Emotional Intelligence coach)

Excellent! Superb! Wonderful! There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this book, I LOVED it. Brahm writes with such ease, the stories are easy to understand with terrific life lessons that I have already started applying to my life. Initially when I bought the book, I though I would read it and pass along, but it is so good, I'm planning on keeping it in my permanent collection and giving other copies as gifts (it was that good).Brahm, an abbot, became a Buddhist monk early in life, after growing up in England and getting a physic's degree from Cambridge. The way he writes, I suspect is the way he speaks and it is such a kind and comfortable tone; making you want to have him as a friend or someone you could pour your heart out too.The stories/lessons that particularly touched me were about laughing when you get angry or upset, anticipation makes fear/pain, creating happiness through laughter and taking oneself so seriously, and stop wasting our lives worrying about things, problems that have no solution? The book is super easy to read, I recommend everyone read it at least once!

Wisdom for the ages. I really enjoyed reading the life experiences and just downright good stuff from Ajahn Brahm. I am a Christian, but found extremely great advice for anyone whether Christian, Buddhist and everyone in between. The humor and humanity is great. A must have for all kinds of life situations.

Ajahn Brahm has really changed my life with his many wise teachings of Buddhism.

I have grown wary of paperback books because many are printed on cheap paper, apparently by a worn out old printing press. It makes them a strain on the eyes. This delightful book by Ajahn Brahm contains enlightening stories from his lectures. Some are repeats of ones in other books, but they are all worth reading over and over until it sinks in. Its nice to have for that bedtime read to settle the nerves and close the eyes with peaceful thoughts.

Am reading it for the second time...full of wise Buddhist oriented anecdotes with a great deal of humor included. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for personal growth.

This is a well written inspiring book; don't need to be a Buddhist to appreciate the humorous stories. A quick read, perfect for someone who needs a laugh or inspiration.

This book was recommended by a Doctor, the stories are inspiring, humerous and send messages thru the story--telling the reader if you want change/ work for it! I recommend it to anyone, but specifically for those who are having a hard time with life in general. If you want to see and grow a beautiful flower-- then don't put a rock on top of the seed preventing the growth...

A wonderful collection of stories that share wisdom and insight with each reading. I actually bought this 2nd copy to give as a wedding gift because the stories help us get along with one another. Ajahn Brahm is a Western (from England) Buddhist monk hugely popular in Australia and SE Asia. He trained in Thailand for 8 years and started a monastery in western Australia. He is an excellent story teller. Quite direct, often funny, He has genuine wisdom to share. You do not need to be Buddhist or know anything at all about Buddhism to appreciate these stories. They are for everyone, everywhere.

The Sorcerer's Companion: A Guide to the Magical World of Harry Potter, by Allan Zola Kronzek

Amazon.com Review

Harry Potter aficionados: remember when Buckbeak, Hagrid's pet Hippogriff, was put on trial by the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures? This crazy idea was not invented by Harry Potter's creator, J.K. Rowling. In fact, from medieval times all the way up to the 19th century, animals and even insects were often charged with crimes, arrested, imprisoned, tried, convicted, and sometimes executed. Harry Potter's fantastic world of magic has its roots in true history, mythology, and folklore; father-daughter team Allan Zola Kronzek and Elizabeth Kronzek have now made this wealth of astonishing information available to Muggles in their Sorcerer's Companion. From astrology to Grindylow to reading tea leaves to witch persecution, this fascinating volume gets to the bottom of every magical mystery connected with Hogwarts. Readers learn the unusual method by which premodern Europeans protected themselves from the cry of the uprooted Mandrake, involving a loyal dog and a rope. (Professor Sprout's solution was to have her herbology students wear earmuffs). Hermione probably knew, when she was hexed by Draco Malfoy so that her teeth suddenly grew past her chin, that hexes originated in Europe. But did she know the connection between hexes and the folk magic of the Pennsylvania Dutch? For fans of the tremendously popular Harry Potter series, or anyone who is intrigued by magical lore, the Sorcerer's Companion will quickly become a true friend. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Father/daughter team Allan Zola Kronzek and Elizabeth Kronzek target the wizard's mature fans with The Sorcerer's Companion: A Guide to the Magical World of Harry Potter. Each alphabetically organized entry contains a potent blend of fact, fiction and folklore. The "Broomstick" entry, for instance, details the effects of a purported "flying ointment" that witches rub into their brooms to prepare for takeoff. The section on "The Sorcerer's Stone" explains the ancient Egyptian art of alchemy. A note at the end of each section shows readers where to find the reference in the Harry Potter books. Thorough research and period prints combine to create a memorable book. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Having lots of fun with this...it isn't meant to be read cover to cover (it's more like a dictionary/encyclopedia) but you can, and I am. Lots of interesting facts and background on all the different things in the book and how they relate to the book/movie series. The next time you see the "Boogyman" ask him about his cousin the Boggart who just may be hiding in your closet if you've been unkind to their friend the Brownie.

Not Rowling, so don't expect it. A good compendium of myths, legends and fables from around the globe. Wonder where Rowling got some of the terrifying and bizarre creatures in the Harry Potter series? Here is the bases for some of these creatures.

Not what I expected, it's basically a dictionary of magical terms and ideas. Most of it is only peripherally related to the Harry Potter series.

I bought this for my grandson (10 years old) who is really into Harry Potter. He has read it twice and loves the content.

While this book does offer a lot of good source material on subjects touched upon in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potters novels (one through four, at the time this book was written), it is by no means an indispensable addition to the Pottermaniac's personal library. The references to events and personages in the Harry Potter books are rather haphazard, and in many cases it is apparent that the Potter link is primarily a gimmick designed to sell more books. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though, because there is information in this book I had not encountered elsewhere, and it does reinforce one's impressive appraisal of the fiber of actual legendry that went into the creation of Rowling's novels. This book offers a concise encyclopedia of magical subjects, creatures, and legends. Much of the material will be familiar to anyone well-read, yet there are aspects to some of even the most familiar of legends, such as that of the werewolf or vampire, that I was unaware of; this consisted for the most part of the different ideas held by different cultures. What was evil to a European of the Middle Ages was sometimes a portent of good to an inhabitant of China or India, for example. Perhaps the most interesting items discussed in these pages are the more obscure legends of unfamiliar beings which I had never heard of before and which I had assumed J.K. Rowling had invented: e.g., grundylows, kappas, and redcaps. The authors, a professional magician and his academic daughter, have written a book that can easily be read by laymen in the ways of magic. The concise, far from elaborate discussions of each topic can be easily understood by young readers obsessed with Harry Potter, making it a welcome, interesting, entertainingly informative read that does not so much add to the legendry created by J.K. Rowling as it does highlight the sturdiness of the foundation upon which her magical adventure stories are built.

Fulfilling and more than adequate compendium to conjure up and dissect the complex HP world. Sorely needs an update to complementthe subsequent volumes.

Really neat book that sort of answers your questions about what certain things are in the HP world according to JK Rowling and a little bit of real world history related to Magic.

It wasn't quite what I thought it was. However, that's my problem as I probably misread the ad. Nice book though.

This is the first book you should buy if you have any interest in collecting classic American cast iron goods. At the very least it can help you figure out if grandma's pots and pans are worth $10 or $1,000. Griswold, Wagner, Favorite, Wapak, and Sidney Hollow Ware are covered. The book is filled with crisp, clear photographs and descriptions. Pattern numbers and descriptions are also listed. All of this is to help you identify what you have. The author is active in the major collecting societies and solicits information, including photographs and corrections, as each edition is prepared. This is a valuable resource that gets better with each edition. It is unfair to be critical of the catalogs values in such a work. Any collector knows that printed catalog values are out of date even before the catalog is actually released. They are useful in determining relative value and rarity, but the current marketplace must looked at to get the best indicators of value. That has become much easier with resources like eBay, Amazon, active collector group websites, and email.

Unlike steve (ca) review, this book is considered the "BIBLE" for cast iron collectors. While some discrepancy on some values in the book may be present, values on most items are completely accurate. It is unfortunate that the other review destroys the credibility of this fine book. The "BLUE" book is in its 4th Edition presently and is the most complete and accurate book on the market for Griswold collectors. This book and the "RED" book should be in every serious cast iron collector's resource library.

The new 4th edition of "The Book of Griswold & Wagner" contains 159 additions and revisions including: updated histories, new listings, and value changes. One example is the increase in value of one piece from $300 to $600. In addition to increased values, some pieces values were reduced to fit with the current market, one reduced by $100. The total value of changes is nearly $1,400. This alone should be worth the purchase of the new 4th editon.Between earlier editions of "The Book of Griswold and Wagner" (the blue book), and the "Book of Wagner and Griswold" (the red book) the pattern number lists were different in format. For this new revision, in addition to adding 159 more listings to the Griswold and Wagner lists, the pattern number lists from both the red book and the blue book were reworked in the new 4th editon. Now both the Griswold and the Wagner pattern number lists are in the same format making them easier to use.The "Book of Griswold and Wagner" and it's companion book, the "Book of Wagner and Griswold" combine to be the most complete and reliable reference on the subjects available.

I was greatly disappointed with the "Revised & Expanded" claim of the second edition. I checked page for page with the first edition and found a total of three additional pictures, two of which were different views of items already listed. There are a few different sizes listed and some price updates, but hardly enough to warrent calling it "Revised and Expanded". If you want to find an item in the second edition, just look in the table of contents in the first edition. The two are the same and the books have exactly the same number of pages. Had I previewed it earlier, I would have spent my money on a different reference book.

This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in cast iron cookware. It is great for identifying pieces, and gives histories of the major U.S. foundries. The photographs are exceptional. I found the information on reproductions to be most helpful. Many people complain that authors inflate the prices in their guides so that their own collections become more valuable. I feel that this book conveys the most accurate and fair pricing possible, taking into account the many variables that affect value, such as demand, true rarity, and reproductions.

I agree with the previous review. The claim of a newly "expanded" edition is far from truth. There is little new material and most prices have not been updated. I find it hard to believe that the authors have not taken into account internet auctions when the developed their values. Stick with the first edition if you have it! And for the publishers and authors, next time just print an updated price list that refers to items in the old edition, unless you do MAJOR revision and add MUCH new material!
