This is a wonderful book, evocative, poignant, joyful and sorrowful, and very clearly written. Reading it is a life-enhancing experience. As soon as I finished it, I bought a copy of its sequel, *Almost a Woman*, equally enthralling and offering insights into worlds both different from those of many of us, and yet utterly familiar as well. Santiago's depiction of her family and the complex and ever-changing relationships between its members brings everyone to life. Reading the two in conjunction is, if possible, even better than reading them separately.

Very vivid picture of life in Puerto Rico. I live in a town that is nearly half Puerto Rican and I found this book added some perspective to my viewpoints. She struggled to adapt to the enforcement of the American Way in her homeland and witnessed her parents struggles as well.I've also had the opportunity to meet and listen to Esmeralda Santiago. She is a fascinating woman.After reading this and then Almost A Woman also by Esmeralda Santiago I have a newfound appreciation for any young person who comes to this country and tries to find their way.

A trip down memory lane into the Puerto Rico of my aunts, which I remember well, even though it was already changing for me. Funny and sad especially as it describes the changing reality of those who could not see a future on the island but were surprised by the harsh reality of life in "los nuevayores". It is great to see how the author did not allow these obstacles to keep her from achieving her goals. Certainly a great example to set for all those who feel overwhelmed by the boulders in the road.

In "If You Want To Write," Brenda Ueland defines the third dimension in writing. There are the two dimensions of the page, and the third dimension is the soul of the writer coming through in the writing. Ueland writes:"...behind the words and the sentences there is this deep, important, moving thing - the personality of the writer. And whatever the personality is, it will shine through the writing and make it notable or great, or touching or cold or niggardly or supercilious or whatever the writer is...If the Third Dimension has something fine in it, it will shine through the inept, dull words as through glass."Esmeralda Santiago's Third Dimension has something fine in it.I didn't really engage with the book until halfway through it. I'm not Puerto Rican. I've been to Brazil several times, but never into a "favela," and her story of growing up poor in rural Puerto Rico gave me some insights of what life in a Brazilian favela must have been like. But, let's face it, how interesting can the life of a shy little girl be?During the first half the book, I kept thinking to myself: It's like Seinfeld. It's a book about nothing! I wondered if I'd even finish it. But, inexplicably, I kept coming back to it, and it was because her Third Dimension hooked me. You either have it or you don't.The second half of the book was like a plane taking off. The story got more interesting as she got older, and the Third Dimension increased as she asserted herself in the world.I found her move to NYC particularly interesting, especially her observations of the coldness of American culture compared to her culture. I see this difference clearly in Brazil vs. America. The expression "calor humano" (human warmth) in Brazilian Portuguese doesn't exist in English because it doesn't exist in Anglo/American culture.The book ends on a high note, which made it worthwhile.So comparing the story to a plane taking off, I'd say for the first half the plane is just waiting at the gate. Umm, are we going anywhere? was the recurring question in my mind. On page 128, the plane started backing out of the gate. As the second half progressed the plane headed down the runway, increased its velocity and took off (the ending).I'd say the book is more literary art than a captivating story. It has a calm vibe, reflective of a time when life was simpler and people were simpler. And it's a nice vibe to bathe in. It takes you out of this modern, hectic world.I'm writing a memoir myself and I appreciated how much work went into this book. I don't think I'd ever be able to give a book one star and berate it like many people do on Amazon. Such people have never attempted to write. It's not easy!Final point: The Amazon copy I bought has a great feel to it. The paper used for the cover is very smooth. It just feels good holding this book, and that added to the nice "energy" of it.I want to read her follow-up memoir "My Turkish Lover" next, because I found the author more interesting the older she got.

An amusing, touching memoir that involves the reader fully in Esmeralda's younger years in Puerto Rico. Full of pathos without being sentimental, this wonderful book brings the Santiago family to life in full color and vibrant sound. This book was simply amazing!!! Esmeralda Santiago really gets in depth on how she was raised in Puerto Rico. Her struggles as a child was not speaking English and living in poverty. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.

This was a terrific book which I enjoyed a lot. It's well written, concise and filled with good "car-guy" advice.I've always enjoyed reading about cars and have wide-ranging tastes, so this book filled the bill in many ways. It's in my "car-guy" room on the bookshelf with many other books, but it's a good one that I'll keep until my kids sell it at my estate sale some day (not to soon, I hope).Rob's a good writer and the photos are also quite excellent.

This is a well written guide to collector cars that "real people" can afford. You wont find any information on Bugattis in here, but you will find some interesting and fun facts about cars that you might have owned in the past or are thinking of buying. I bought 2 copies at Amazon and gave one to a friend -- he has read it from cover to cover as well. I know Rob Sass - he writes for SCM as well as Hagerty's magazine and the New York Times automobile section. His stories are full of humor as well as personal tales of the many cars he has owned, driven and restored. This would make a great gift for an aspiring gearhead or a dyed in the wool car guy.

This book has a lot of good information and is also entertaining.

If you're constantly dragging home project cars like me this is a great book to help you know what you're getting into before you drag said project home. Mostly covers import sports cars and hardly any domestic stuff though.

What a great book about old cars. It makes it less daunting to buy and use an old car. Now I just need to escape Manhattan. Does Mr. Sass have a book for that?

I had never even heard of this book, and then I saw it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble. I have been restoring old cars, starting with my Grandfathers '67 Dodge, and that led into Hemmings Classic Cars, Sports & Exotics and Muscle Machines, and then other cars as well. This book is a must have for those interested in foreign sports cars, but has a good section titled American Iron as well. The photos are great color & deatil, and the mix of advice and personal experience is like having a bunch of the Illustrated Buyers Guides (do they still make those? Old ones are on Amazon used, but I havent seen any new ones in a long time) rolled into one book. I will keep this book permanently. Cant recommend it highly enough.

Classic cars aren't just for rich folk--that's the gospel according to Sass. The author proves his point again and again in this collection of amusing adventures buying and selling great old cars. To wit--he put together a collection of three very sporty examples (a Lancia, a Datsun 240Z, and a Volvo P1800) for less than $9000...all rust free, all in drivable condtion.This is a great handbook for anyone new to the hobby, but any gearhead will find it an enjoyable and enlightening read. But be forewarned... readers may find themselves with a new addiction to Craigslist.

I am a late convert to the GOT series and playing catch up from Season one. It is a big world George RR Martin has created and as I haven't read the books there are lots of things I have would like to explore in more detail. This companion book is therefore perfect. The episode recaps are really good and pick up on the things I want to know more about. It is well written, well laid out and to my mind well worth the money and has saved me hours of timing trying to find answers to my questions on the internet. I think ardent fans and new comers to the series would all find it a good investment and enhance their enjoyment of the series.

Too intricate, better to watch and figure it out as you go.

Sometimes you get so caught up in the ambiance of a show that you lose the details of the story. Given the depth of the Game Of Thrones it became real easy to get lost. With the "Binge Guide" I was not only able to get back on track, but there were scenes that I'd completely overlooked that were brought to my attention, which forced me to go back and rewatch certain episodes.

A very good idea and while simple - well executed. Handy guide to who does what when and where. With the numerous locations and so many characters this is a great reference source for keeping track of it all. I read this after viewing the season and found it a useful outline of the key players and events over the season.

I have started to read the books. I've read Book 1, as I read I would use the guide to help me to understand what had happened and get into the characters in more depth. I found this extremely helpful.
