Fourth in the series, I find these books great for casual listening when I don't want to think too much about the content. The series centers around James McGill, an irreverent, intelligent, intuitive soldier who has his own brand of moral conscience. He's brave, self serving, and a natural leader. He spends most of his time trying to explain why he shouldn't be executed for the things he does, but manages to twist things around so the facts make sense, at least from his point of view.If you want spoilers, look elsewhere as I don't like them and don't write them.

2/16/155 Stars out of 5I really like theses books although I’m not so sure I could accept the idea of dying and the being regenerated in a new body!If you haven’t read any of these books, you really need to go back to the beginning and start from there. Our main character, James McGill, is a Legionnaire with the Legion Varus. How he stays in this legion is the real mystery. See, James McGill isn’t one to follow orders or the rules. He does what James McGill thinks is right and then sorts out the consequences later. As I mentioned, dying is part of the job for Legionnaries, especially for Legion Varus. But, dying doesn’t necessarily mean “dead”. The Legion has an alien machine which takes organic matter and converts it into a new human with the downloading of that persons most recent memories! Out of this machine pops a fresh human. This copy has all the memories of its previous body up until they were killed! That to me is really gruesome. I mean dying is bad enough, especially if it was a violent death, but remembering how you just died who put a lot of people in the insane asylum! It’s just not something you’d want to remember.James McGill has been in the Legion awhile. This will be his fourth world that he and the Legion Varus have been assigned a mission to do something. In every past mission, James McGill has been killed several times. He hopes that won’t happen this time and he tries his hardest to make that happen. Except things always go wrong for McGill.Because he has been an impressive Legionnaire when he’s fighting, he’s up for promotion to Veteran. This is like an NCO position and has to be vetted through the other Legion Vets, none of which like James McGill. They all think he thinks too much and they wind up paying for it. So, James has to pass a "trial by fire” ritual set up by the other Vets. But, he quickly finds out that it’s rigged against him.Ok, you need to read the book to find out what happens to Veteran James McGill. He’s also wanted by the Nairbs which is like the Galactic judges. They can also execute McGill permanently and if not him, all of Humanity. But, James McGill is a resourceful guy if nothing else. He thinks on his feet and usually figures out hot to not permanently die. That’s a good thing.

Deeper down the rabbit hole goes Mcgill this time. All in all just a great book and a fine addition to the series. I have to say I do not care for politics (even in sci fi literature!) however how this is tied together within the action in such a way that there is no hum drum boring waiting for the backstab, it rolls right through the book binding it together and adding a degree of suspense that I did not anticipate. As with the rest of the series I found it a fast read due to my inability to put down my e reader. If the politics are a bit less in the next book I would be happy but five stars is still five stars, I could not give it any less. I hope this review helps. I would have said much much more but did not want to dump a spoiler on anyone. Get it, read it, and for gosh sakes if you have not read the others yet please read them first. In order: Steel World, Dust World, Tech World. Thanks to Amazon's lousy marketing (having the inability to list a series in order, and just wanting to sell sell sell) I read Dust World first by mistake and went back and read Steel World etc.

This series is the first of this author's that I have read, and I would say the story has been pretty good up until this book.I would recommend reading it anyways, because it's a series and it continues the story of James, Mcgill and our other cohorts in Legion Varus. But the actual story of this book, is really really "hodge podge" .. there are so many scenes in the book, especially with Claver.. one of the main "villians" in the book.. that just are beyond a stretch of imagination. And even Jame's Mcgill does things, not as a show of growth as a character, but just things that are borderline ridiculous... Which if you've read the previous three books, and then you read this one, you'll understand what I am referencing. Basically its his negotiations.. there's nothing wrong with his communication with the other characters and his superiors.. its how he handles all the situations..Although there is one point in the book where he kills two of his torturers, which was a pretty cool little scenario in how he got out of that. I really liked this. Mainly it was his dealings with Claver after a certain point that got old.

B.V Larson has grown on me, this was the series I started with and have enjoyed it. One reviewer stated that McGill was becoming a schemer in the series, and with out giving away the story, I disagree. I believe he's handling situations as they come, and when other characters assume something of him if it helps the whole lot, he just smiles and nods. Kinda like taking the path of least resistance, but also holding firm to a set of principles. All that aside, still a great read in my opinion, especially since some sci-fi books focus too much on one element, fighting, technology, character development... Etc. It is a bit heavy in some areas, but honestly that contrasts nicely with the fighting. Because once that comes, this book can't be set down. Hope to see this series continue, many threads left to explore by the author and McGill himself.

The bloodline books are great, and this one's no exception. The bloodlines come from various parts of the world and tie to particular events or periods. For example, the Mekhet Jones bloodline comes from the poisoned battlefields of World War I, and - having adapted to mustard gas - now depend on poisoned blood for sustenance. The book is glossy and full color; the art is awesome. If you like the bloodline books and/or want to add some variety and flavor to your Vampire game, this one's a good pick.

I loved the book because it had so many older bloodlines with interesting twists and flare. The appolinairians were an excellent bloodline for ghosts, there are Thai bloodlines and even a religious groups of vampires. They even have a group of diablerist vampires that made me twitch.

Another excellent addition to the the Bloodlines collection. This book allows the reader a whole new look at how the bloodlines have changed over the years and adding new areas for either charecter or storytellers can find a host of new ideas for their charecters

I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.4.5 stars — Dude, if this is the end of the series, I’m going to be really sad. Each story has been a fascinating look at hockey in a small town, and this one just brought that all together in the most perfect way. You can totally read it as a standalone, but if you do read them as a series, you’ll see how all the little events from the previous two books have culminated in the conflict/climax/resolution of this book. These YAs really do have a more mature feel to them, though this one was perhaps the tamest. There is a somewhat steamy scene, but it’s mostly cut away (and fits the maturity of the characters). But it tackles some difficult subjects, like hazing, bullying, mental health, and other subjects that are too specific to mention. I just loved the way the story played out. Ms. Cross really showcased how difficult it would be to take a stand against a toxic environment that has existed and been allowed to fester for decades. I could see this happening in a small town, and I truly felt for Jake and how torn he was over how he felt, and what he wanted for the future. If he’d just made the right decision all along, I don’t think it would have had the same impact…and I don’t think it would have had the same sense of realism. Anyways, I really don’t want to get into the plot too much, just know that I was gripped and that I was so happy with how it played out.Now onto our characters! Brooke was kind of fascinating, but I feel like we kind of got shortchanged on her story. We got hints of things that happened in Austin, and with her Dad…and while some bits were fleshed out, others were left more vague. I was actually a bit let down by that. And not only that, but there was no real development with what was going on with her Mom, and how that played out. Which is okay in some respects, b/c there was enough else going on, but then why have those bits mentioned? I also get it in that when something so difficult is happening at home, it can make sense to just compartmentalize it and focus on other things to deal. However, I LOVED the whole girl’s hockey team story!! While there was a part of me that was skeptical about the rate at which Brooke learned and excelled, in the end I’m not sure I really cared. I loved seeing the challenges they faced, and the support that Sheriff Hammond gave his team. I also loved seeing Brooke develop a friendship with Rosie.Jake was so not what I was expecting. I’m not sure what I was expecting, it’s been a bit since I read the previous two books, so I didn’t have a good memory of him necessarily, but he was so much more earnest and…just endearing than I was expecting. I really ended up loving him. He was hardworking, and caring, but caught up in the craziness that is Otters hockey. But deep down he was a genuinely good guy.And I really loved the two of them together. I felt the connection and the crushes on both sides, the fascination with one another. It felt real, and sweet, and just made me happy. They were good for one another.About my only complaint is that this book, like the others, had odd time jumps. I guess I don’t mind that happening, but then maybe mention the time in between. It just always took me a minute to adjust and be like “oh wait, so it must be like weeks later now”.Needless to say, I started this one late last night and stayed up way too late because I had a hard time putting it down (though I did eventually). There’s just something about the way Ms. Cross writes that sucks me in and has me compelled to read just one more chapter.

I remember reading the previous book in this series and thinking it was cute read with a bit of emotional depth so I was curious to pick up another book in this series. Here we have Brooke who is new in town after her father went to jail and her and her mother had to move in with her grandma. Her mother is having some mental health issues and Brooke is also dealing with some of that herself. Being the new girl in town is not easy in the middle of all that. Trying out for the new girls hockey team is her way of challenging herself and maybe fitting in a bit.Jake is the star of the hockey team and future captain this new season. High school hockey is the biggest thing in town and that comes with a lot of pressure and years-long tradition. Including a hazing ritual that he has to be a part of and goes terribly wrong. There are things about this author’s writing that I enjoy but there are also other things that I just can’t connect with. I do like that the characters in this series usually have to deal with some issues that make them have to grow and mature. That’s where our characters find themselves in this book, especially Jake. He’s in a really tough spot and some of the decisions he has to make have the chance of impacting his plans for the future. At the same time, ON THIN ICE was very slow moving. I’m not sure if it’s because there are some scenes that go on and on about things I didn’t find all that interesting or relevant to the plot. That could just be me. The plot, however, was something I enjoyed. I liked seeing these two characters help each other through some tough situations. But I can’t say we dug deep enough for my liking into what made these two tick. Or even deep enough into some of the more serious subjects this book tackles. I wanted more character development. Yes, there are actions that show the characters are maturing and thinking for themselves but I think we could’ve had some better development in the internal struggle of how they got there. This is still a cute read and if you’re like me and don’t usually read young adult contemporary, this author may be a good fit.

I sort of knew what to expect as I had read this book years ago when it first came out. For some reason, it began running through my mind lately so I ordered another copy from Amazon. First one lost a long time ago. Reading it as a way older person really made me look at it differently. Made me wonder why the Canopans bothered. Kind of wish they had minded their own business in the first place. Also made me ponder what I can do now to make sure I go to Zone 3 or maybe 4. Want no part of Zone 6 or the planet. Much as I love it.

"Shikasta' is Earth. Were we used as a social experiment during our rise as a species by an advanced star system? Does the Old Testament contain our fragmented remembrance of the "though shalt not" advice of that system? But, on a higher plane, Lessing gives a warning about our future if we continue to rape our planet with an economic theology of consumerism and of political, racial, and religious division.

good book

This is my favorite book of all time. I must have read it six times, the last maybe ten years ago. Reading it again I am discovering so much more after completing a BA majoring in writing and cultural studies. If you want light entertainment it probably isn't for you, it can seem dark at times. If you have ever thought that things weren't quite right and maybe the world is a stranger place than it seems then dig in and you'll find great insight. Its a brilliant metaphor for subjectivity and the human condition.

A fascinating channeled work from Lessing.

While interesting, Shikasta tries to do too much with its mythological, historical, political themes describing the origen of humans, their societies and history.

This book is a the first of a series of 5. Originallly intended to be one volume ,it grew into Canopus in Argos.Shikasta, however does dtasnd on its own and is the strongest of the 5

Recommended to me by a friend, as a rare piece of science-fiction by a Nobel prize winner in literature. I found the prose largely impossible to comprehend. To this day I could not tell you what the story was about, or what the arc of the plot was. And this is shocking, as I do read some pretty arcane stuff.

Lily Owens has spent fourteen years blaming herself for her mother's death. She's had to tolerate a cruel, abusive father and been raised by tobacco-spitting Rosaleen, her nearest hope to mother-love. It is 1964. The Civil Rights Act has just been signed and Rosaleen walks into small-town Sylva, Southern Carolina to register as a first-time voter. On the way she argues with the town's worst racist, spits on his boot and is jailed. Lily Owens decides this is the moment to jail-bust Rosaleen and run away from home. They land up as fugitives in Tumaron with three sisters who have a connection with Lily's mother. Lily starts her journey towards forgiving herself, her mother and experiencing growing up in a loving household. This book is memorable in several ways: Sue Monk Kidd's original, quirky, highly perceptive portrayal of life in the deep south; the serious issues of racism and religion are shown - not in the usual hackneyed way, but with an irreverence and humour that made me smile time and again. Picture a colourful group of eccentric sisters with a love for life, wearing flamboyant hats, gospel singing and dancing in a canga line; the story is poignant and the characters become complex, strong and wise. I enjoyed reading this story and once started had to see where it would lead.

The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of a young Southern girl and her complicated past. Lilly lives on a peach farm in South Carolina during the 1960s with her abusive father, T Ray. She has held on to a blurred memory of her deceased mother, and she is desperate to make it clear. When Lilly’s nanny Rosaleen is insulted by three racist men in their small town, they escape to Tiburon, South Carolina. This town holds the answer to Lilly’s questions. They are taken in by three African American beekeeping sisters named August, May, and June. Lilly finds comfort in their way of life and their belief in the Black Madonna. She starts to find out about her mother’s past and embraces a new lifestyle that teaches her about the world. One of the main messages of The Secret Life of Bees is that sometimes you must leave home to find home. Lilly knew that there was more to her mother’s past than what she had been told, and a twist of fate helped her find the answers she needed. She found protection from her abusive father with three surrogate mothers. The Secret Life of Bees is also about learning from your mistakes and accepting your flaws. Lilly learned that she accidentally killed her mother when she tried to hand a gun to her for protection from T Ray. She was stunned that she was capable of something like that and regarded herself as a horrible person. It took her a long time to come to terms with her actions and love herself. Finally, the most prevalent theme in the book is the importance of having love and compassion in your life. In addition to finding a place where she felt like she belonged, she also found loving home. This is not something she had experienced before as her father was abusive. When she found August, May, and June, she felt comforted and appreciated. She realized that one of the things that any human needs to grow and flourish is a nurturing family. The Secret Life of Bees is a book that you will not want to put down. The story is intriguing because it captures the essence of what human beings desire to have- love, appreciation, and respect. The story is told from a young girl’s point of view and describes her journey to uncover her mother’s past. It is engaging because the reader does not understand all the details of her mother’s past until the end of the book, so it leaves the reader with a desire to uncover the mystery. I truly enjoyed this book and was a little sad when it was done. I highly recommend this amazing novel to everyone!

I purchased a Kindle edition of the book to read after hearing the title mentioned in passing by friends and am so glad I did. I have seldom read prose as poetic and tragically lovely as Kidd has penned in The Secret Life of Bees. I felt a sisterhood with Lily and my face reflected in her desperation for maternal love. I fell in love with the "Calendar" sisters, and wanted to spend a night in a honey house, even if all I did was sweat through my shirt. Mostly, I longed to be surrounded by strong, independent women such as Rosaleen and August. These characters will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I read a book recently about a white skinned black woman in the south and was blown away by what I learned from it. I grew up during the 60s turmoil and couldn't believe the evils of racism. It's no wonder there is so much hatred. Love is a necessity to happiness. Thank goodness this amazing black women knew how to love. West coast living was so different from the South. This is an amazing work even if it is fiction. It still is filled with a lot of truths.

I really did enjoy this book. It is a book you need to read with your heart wide open. The only reason I gave it a 4, instead of 5 stars,is that the ending felt incomplete. I want to know what happened 5 or 10 years down the road. I want to know how everything that happened in this story played into Lilys future. Considering that the author talks about how many people have asked for a sequel, I am thinking that I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Bees are just the motif, not what the story is about. This is a beautifully written coming-of-age story set in the American South in 1964, after President Johnson signed the Civil Right Act. So many other topics are dealt with, including abuse. Feminine strength is portrayed sometimes in lovely, other times inspiring, and even in humorous ways.

Got hooked from the very beginning and didn't want to put it down sob as I read it in one setting. A teenager, Lily, seemed to be trapped in a circumstance she cannot escape from. Blurred memories of tragedy concerning her mother whom she barely remembers, and having to deal with a father who is harsh and cruel. Her journey is an inspired one and truly unforgettable! Highly recommended.
