If you’re looking for a book that will greatly help you along on your own Fraktur designing, inking, lettering, and painting journey, this one definitely fits the bill. Step-by step instructions for several projects that show you the entire artistic process in detail, plus lots of motifs like flowers, fruit, birds, hearts, angels, houses, borders, etc. for inspiration (or tracing) so that you can mix-and-match them to create your own compositions, as well as a birth certificate, a house blessing, family trees (two different designs), and a family records design that are all full-sized and traceable, plus a Fraktur alphabet to practice (also traceable), both upper and lower case, which Ruthanne designed to be easier to read than the traditional Blacklettering (but still looks enough like traditional Blacklettering to give it that authentic Fraktur feel).So there’s literally everything you’d need to be inspired to design your own pieces, or for you to trace straight from the book to makesomething super-quaint for your home.Includes the history of Fraktur and photos of antique Fraktur pieces at the end of the book, plus which specific tools are required, like pen point types, choice of inks, papers, and watercolor paint colors for a traditional effect—I really enjoyed doing the little 2 ¾ x 3 ¾ inch step-by-step introductory project she provided because it wasn’t too intimidating for me to get started with. I absolutely LOVE this book, and feel like it was certainly well worth the price. With large glossy pages that are spiral bound in order to lie flat, and excellent color photographs.
This book is a wonderful beginners guide to painting Fraktur in the Pennsylvania German style. It does give a brief lesson on how to write one, easy to master, easy to read, script that is appropriate to the genre. To be fair, the subject of calligraphy and the instruction of multiple, more advanced scripts, is far too big a subject to be covered here, it is a subject worthy of it's own book.This book will give you what you need to make a nice gift or art work for your own home. It does a great job of providing inspirational examples and outlines that can be copied or traced, in any combination, to produce your own, unique Fraktur.Another reviewer complained about the lack of attention to lettering, but the content of his review leads me to believe that his interest lies in European Fraktur and illuminated manuscript, not the traditional folk art of Pennsylvania. This book very clearly covers the American art form called Fraktur, which is similar, but far less ornate than it's European counterpart.
I enjoy using this book and have done projects out of this book. If you are not a calligrapher then you might want to buy a book that teaches the hand of Fraktur or German Text also called Gothic and Blackletter. I can suggest "George Bickham's Penmanship Made Easy (Young Clerks Assistant" for training the eyes and studying the forms of the German Text. I recommend "Calligraphy for the Beginner by Tom Gourdie" on page 41 of his version of German Text. I would also suggest you to google German Text or Fraktur and to visit IAMPETH website under Lesson. I look forward to making more projects in this book.It is sad that the author is no longer with us, this is a special (one of kind) book which I will always be thankful to the author for publishing.
Interestingly the author is in the PA Guild of Craftsmen so I immediately felt a kinship with her. Years ago I had been a member as well and she threw great light on how and why the fraktur form developed. The book teaches how to do this type of calligraphy if one desires to do so. The symbolism and the messages conveyed on the frakturs is more meaningful since I read the book. Very nformative and book was in perfect condition
Good overview of the traditional artform. I personally knew the artist/author, so this book has sentimental value to me as well.She gives good basic instruction for anyone wanting to give this a try
Fraktur is a Germanic art form. It is both a lettering and a design. They are commonly used in making certificates. It is primarily a floral design, somewhat similar to Swedish kurbits or Norwegian rosemaling. The samples give you a lot of ideas to work on, then you can make your own. With the lettering, you'll need some calligraphy pens (I like the double-end markers!). Fraktur is also similar to Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Signs. I get ideas from both. This is great, colorful folk art to learn.
This is a really fine volume of fraktur examples, history and instruction. The hardcover has a bound spiral spine so it lays flat. So inspiring! I would have liked more photos of fraktur work.
Includes all you need, what supplies and where to buy them, templates, tips for design and layout, all you need to set yourself up. A bit of history and photos of old Frakturs for inspiration. Notes from the author and "how to " tips only a seasoned artist would know. I am now ready to paint my own Frakturs. Easy step by step instructions that take the guess work and that fear of just doing it away. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
