I would give this book even more stars if I could. I am currently reading it for the 3rd time, and I am still picking up on new things and ways of thinking. Yes, it is informative about Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, but the bulk of the book challenges ones thinking, way of life, and the way we cultivate what comes into our lives, both positive and negative. I purchased this book because I struggle with anxiety and depression and have difficulty finding joy in life sometimes. I am not saying this book is a cure, but it has helped me. Recently, going through some struggles at work with coworkers and negativity, I chose to start reading this book once again to help me not to thrive on the negative, but to Choose Joy. Can't recommend this book enough (even if you are not religious, even if you don't know anything about these two men, the book will benefit you.) Definitely will be buying copies for Christmas gifts.

The Book of Joy lives up to its title and goes much further. It highlights the many ways in which we can all bring greater joy, fulfillment and purpose into our lives, and illuminates the nature of the interconnected relationship between painful emotions and deep happiness. The book not only reaffirms this truth with great clarity, but through the magic of Abrams’ skillful facilitation shows the many ways in which these two great spiritual leaders, both of whom are also great teachers of peace and reconciliation, embody the totality of what it means to be both ordinary and simultaneously outrageous, mischievous, and completely unpredictable! An unexpected delight of this book is the frequency and ease with which these two men bring forth their playfulness, wit, wisdom, and laugh-out-loud humor, even when they are immersed in profoundly deep discourse. What I found personally most rewarding was the teaching that ran through the book that had to do with the many ways in which it is possible to find joy even in the most difficult of times. Both of these men have endured great hardship and adversity both in their own lives and in the lives of millions of their countrymen, women and children, and yet their extraordinarily brilliant spirit shines brightly through every page of this amazing book. How do they do it? The Book of Joy truly fulfills its promise to answer that question.I give this book five stars only because I can’t give it six!

A quick read that offers much good medicine for our troubled world. Both the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu have risen beyond their respective religions to reach out to all humans regardless of their location. A lot of inspiration here. Read it once or twice and chew on what they say. It could lighten your load, put a smile on your face, and maybe change your life.

I wish everyone in the world could read this book. Could not put it down from the moment I started reading. H.H. Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu are two of the finest living Beings on the planet. We are fortunate to have their encouraging and inspiring words on how to live in these challenging times. I sent copies of this book to friends and family and they will pay it forward. The best book that I read in 2016.

This is a marvelous book, by two of the most genuinely happy people living. They have both gone through great pain, horrendous sorrow, and yet they remain happy. How is that? They have discovered the "secret" and herein share it with all of us, if we will be read with open hearts. The book is a series of discussions between the two clerics, moderated by Douglas Abrams. The format is informal, and a little different than what many of us are used to, but the words, oh, the words!"I believe everyone has the responsibility to develop a happier world. We need, ultimately, to have a greater concern for others' well-being. In other words, kindness or compassion, ..." (HH the Dalai Lama). This book shows us how to develop a happier world—starting with ourselves. Love your neighbor as you love yourself (Mark 12:31, the Holy Bible)—after all, if you don't love yourself, you cannot love anyone else. "The ultimate source of Happiness is within us." (HH)In the back of this book are meditations and prayers to help us on our daily journey to find true joy, the ultimate source of our happiness, and once found, we'll know how to share it with one and all.The only quibble I have with this book is there is no index. I heartily and unequivocally recommend this book to everyone, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey—just starting out or finishing a life long quest. I further suggest you buy a hard copy you can make notes in, so you can find things at a glance when you want to. Yes, I know, writing in books is a big no-no – but it makes me happy.

This charming book focuses on how we can improve our lives and be joyful. It is a practical guide not just theoretical. We are all flawed need help. It shows how to cope with suffering and become joyful.

Amazing insights into how to experience joy and compassion. Really well written by Doug Abrams; potentially life changing dialogues between two of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time.

#11,280 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was a little disappointed when I got this guide and it wasn't as thick as I prepared for. But it is EXACTLY what I needed. I have a 14 month old pit who cannot focus around people even after expensive training courses I've taken with him and almost one year of training at home with him.I had been wary of using an e collar but was confident enough in his temperament that I purchased one but was afraid to start, even after watching a lot of videos. Especially since my dog understands his commands, he just doesn't always want to do them. This book is a quick reference to understanding how to use the collar. And the basic premise of the book is to help you incorporate it into your already existing training methods. The collar should not fear the dog into acting, it should simply be a reminder to the dog to perform the task given to them. There are do's and don't's. Basic rules as to how you should work up to working off leash. This was one of the biggest things I needed. Was glad to see it written out. He also mentions "act of God corrections" which is something else I needed to know that I'm glad he addressed, since I hadn't seen that mentioned in any sort of training video I watched. It's a handy guide and I'm glad I purchased it. It has given me more confidence in using the collar. Larry preaches building a connection between your dog and yourself, with the collar being an extension of that. The more you work with your dog and the collar, the more he is going to trust you and the more powerful your relationship is going to be.If you want a guide to fully training your dog from day one, DO NOT start here. If you have a semi trained dog that needs the extra help of an e collar to help he/she live a more enriched life, this is an amazing little tool that I would highly recommend purchasing.

Larry Krohn absolutely knows his stuff, and after watching some videos online of his training, I was excited that a book was offered because I prefer to be able to pick up a book and skip to the parts that interest me rather than watch long videos. I expected a bit more than the book delivered. It's not particularly well written or edited, and most of the book consists of case studies of specific problem dogs instead of instructions for using an e-collar to train basic obedience. I honestly only found a few pages of the book to be useful/helpful, and even those were a bit difficult tor read. Many of the case studies included are up on the author's blog on his website, so there really isn't a reason to buy this book if you have the internet. I think the potential of this book and trainer is huge, but Krohn's strength is in dog training, not writing, and I expected a more professional and polished presentation for a physical book. This appears to be self-published, contains no pictures or illustrations (there is one diagram), and the writing is pretty mediocre. A skilled editor would have made a critical difference here. While I like the author's training methods and he's a great advocate for dogs, I wouldn't recommend this book for the price and think you are better of sticking to the internet and YouTube videos.

I was disappointed in this product. Instead of teaching you how to integrate the e-collar into training, most of the "book" (more of a bound print-out) describes how the author got interested in e-collar training and personal anecdotes about dogs (I didn't get the book to read about how the author's Rottweiler had cancer and died). When he does talk about training, he does not define terms (e.g., "place board", "dominant dog collar") or spell-out abbreviations (e.g., "pp training"). He has a few stories about working with specific dogs, which I assume are meant to teach, but are just personal stories without real substance (for example, he mentions his training of a dog was successful because the owners changed what they did at home, but then gives no information about what the owners did that made a difference).Additionally, the spelling errors, grammar errors, and incomplete sentences make this amateurish "book" a frustrating read.

A great overall coverage of proper and humane use of a remote collar. I used to be one of those folks that hated the thought of using a "shock" collar on any dog. My experience was "comply or fry" and I hated that. I was able to talk to a gun dog owner that used ecollars differently. I watched him and his dogs happily working and that changed my opinion. I then soaked up as much knowledge as I could. The remote collar is the most humane training tool in my bag, because I was taught how to use it humanely. This book is a great resource to beginning the journey of remote collar usage. Thank you for writing this Larry. JJ

Review

"Reynolds' simple line drawings with bursts of color have become iconic, and they serve the simple, affirming text with their own vision of the emotions and possibilities we humans have in this wide world . . . Grown-ups will enjoy reading this regularly with the children in their lives: The reminders benefit us all." (Kirkus Reviews)"Verde brings it all together in the end with the connectedness of humans to each other. The clear and concise text is well-matched by Reynolds’ familiar illustrations in which viewers follow an unnamed boy of color (born on page one) on his human journey . . . An age-appropriate and hopeful look at what it means to be a connected human on this planet." #902 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Optimistic and a winner; this book will leave your little one feeling comforted. And whether you read it during the day or as a bedtime story, I think you might be rewarded with a little smile. It’s a book about being connected and all the good things that a human can do and feel. And it’s an acknowledgement that yes, everyone feels sad sometimes, or maybe makes bad choices sometimes. But we can always start to make good choices and turn things around. And it celebrates being human. This book is simple and delightful. It’s for ages 4-8 and the odds are good your little one will want to read it over and over again. Yup, it’s one of those. The whimsical pictures by illustrator Pete Reynolds make exploring each new page a fun discovery, and author Susan Verde infuses the book with cheerfulness.

An excellent book! We had a great discussion about empathy in my 4th grade class, today. We used this book as the basis for our discussion. The illustrations are beautiful, and the prose are simple, yet powerful and effective. There are a few pages I’d like to make into posters and hang in my classroom to remind my class of the message we got from this book. I will definitely be referencing this book throughout the year, and bringing it out whenever conflicts between students arise. If you loved I am Peace, you'll love this book just as much, or even more!

I loved reading this book with my students this past month. It’s a great book to talk about empathy, even though it never mentions the word except in the title. At the end of it, I always ask them, so why do you think it’s called “a book of empathy,” and we’re able to talk about the many things that weave us together and make us part of a great whole, each one worthy of respect and consideration. I am a school counselor and read this with grades 2 & 3, but it could be valuable for most grade levels. I also gifted a copy of it to our self-contained classroom.

A beautiful story of empathy and self love. I actually cried the first time I read it, it touched me deeply. I love this message for children and adults alike. I have her other two books and I’m so happy to add this gem to the collection. As a children’s yoga and mindfulness instructor, these messages perfectly align with our practice.

Love this book. Use it in my kindergarten class. Easy come up with follow up activities to enhance concept.

I love Susan Verde with her touching and heartwarming series (I am Yoga, I am Peace, I am Human) that connects children and adults to yoga, mindfulness, and social emotional learning and experiences. The language she uses is soft spoken and kind, yet powerful. It’s great for children’s yoga teachers, educators, and families! The water color illustrations by Peter Reynolds are also stunning.

Amazing story for kids!! Loved it from start to finish and more importantly the kids loved it!!!

Great little book to help kiddos know it’s ok to experience their emotions and not expect perfection.

Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and the Sterilization of Carrie Buck, by Adam Cohen

Review

“This well-written narrative of legal history demonstrates what happens when the powerful and elite in society fail to protect the powerless and poor…Imbeciles combines an investigative journalist’s instinct for the misuse of power, a lawyer’s analytic abilities, and a historian’s eye for detail to tell this compelling and emotional story…[The book] serves as a cautionary tale about what may happen when those who have, or obtain, power use the institutions of government and the law to advance their own interests at the expense of those who are poor, disadvantaged, or of different ‘hereditary’ stock.”—Los Angeles Review of Books “[IMBECILES is] the story of an assault upon thousands of defenseless people seen through the lens of a young woman, Carrie Buck, locked away in a Virginia state asylum. In meticulously tracing her ordeal, Cohen provides a superb history of eugenics in America, from its beginnings as an offshoot of social Darwinism—human survival of the fittest—to its rise as a popular movement, advocating the state-sponsored sterilization of ‘feeble-minded, insane, epileptic, inebriate, criminalistics and other degenerate persons.’”—David Oshinksy, The New York Times Book Review (cover review)   “In this detailed and riveting study, Cohen captures the obsession with eugenics in 1920s America… Cohen's outstanding narrative stands as an exposé of a nearly forgotten chapter in American history.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“IMBECILES indicts and convicts any number of villains, albeit with proper judicial restraint. Cohen mostly lets the facts speak for themselves…[and] skillfully frames the case within the context of the early 20th century eugenics movement…[The book’s] considerable power lies in Cohen’s closer examination of the principal actors…Buck v. Bell has never been overturned. But thanks to Adam Cohen, we shall never forget it.” —Boston Globe  “Cohen…tells the shocking story of one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in U.S. history…and demonstrates to a fare-thee-well how every step along the way, our system of justice failed…The last chapter of the case of Carrie Buck, Cohen reveals, hasn't been written…IMBECILES leaves you wondering whether it can happen here — again.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “An important new book…which details the eugenic horror that still haunts the American legal system… Cohen’s narrative of the legal case that enshrined these practices is a page-turner, and the story it tells is deeply, almost physically, infuriating… Cohen reminds us of the simple, shocking fact that while forced sterilizations are rare today, they remain legal because American courts have never overturned Buck v. Bell.”—The New Republic “Imbeciles is lively, accessible and, inevitably, often heart-wrenching.”—Nature “Searing…In this important book, Cohen not only illuminates a shameful moment in American history when the nation’s most respected professions—medicine, academia, law, and the judiciary—failed to protect one of the most vulnerable members of society, he also tracks the landmark case’s repercussions up to the present.”—Booklist (starred review)“The story of Carrie Buck…illustrates society’s treatment of the poor, of minorities and immigrants, and other populations considered ‘undesirable.’… This thought-provoking work exposes a dark chapter of American legal history.”—Library Journal “Imbeciles is a revelatory book. Eye-opening and riveting. In these pages, Adam Cohen brings alive an unsettling, neglected slice of American history, and does so with the verve of a master storyteller.”  —Alex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here“Cohen revisits an ugly chapter in American history: the 1920s mania for eugenics…[in this] compelling narrative....He also tells a larger story of the weak science underlying the eugenics cause and the outrageous betrayal of the defenseless by some of the country's best minds…A shocking tale about science and law gone horribly wrong, an almost forgotten case that deserves to be ranked with Dred Scott, Plessy, and Korematsu as among the Supreme Court's worst decisions.”—Kirkus (starred review )  “Adam Cohen knows how to recognize a story and has the gift to tell it with disarming fidelity to facts that make us cringe. In that vein, Imbeciles made me question my longstanding admiration for the mind and character of Oliver Wendell Holmes and my fading hope that the Supreme Court can sometimes save us from ourselves.”—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution “‘Three generations of imbeciles are enough’—these are among the most haunting words in the history of the Supreme Court. In Imbeciles, Adam Cohen unearths the secret history of the case that moved Oliver Wendell Holmes to utter that notorious sentence. The book provides a stark portrait of the resilient eugenics movement—and a welcome warning about its sinister appeal.”—Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Oath and The Nine “A powerfully written account of how the United States Supreme Court collaborated in the involuntary sterilization of thousands of poor and powerless women. Cohen’s Imbeciles is that rarest of books—it is a shocking story beautifully told, and also the definitive study of one of the darkest moments in the history of American law.”—John Fabian Witt, author of Lincoln’s Code and The Accidental Republic“Imbeciles is at once disturbing, moving, and profoundly important.  With the zeal of an investigative journalist and a novelist’s insight, Adam Cohen tells the story of an injustice carried out at the highest levels of government, and how it reverberated across history and remains with us today.  Cohen is one of our most gifted writers, and he has turned the story of the Supreme Court and American eugenics into one of the best books I’ve read in decades.”—Amy Chua, John M. Duff, Jr. Professor of Law, Yale Law School, and author of The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

This book is a horrifying story of the movement to sterilize so-called incompetents, as embodied and culminating in the 1927 U.S. Supreme Court case of Buck v. Bell. The facts are every bit as horrifying as those in the fictionalized masterpiece "The Underground Railroad", but unlike the "magical realism" employed to such great effect by Colson Whitehead in that book, "Imbeciles" is entirely factual to the point of being utterly surreal. If that were it, I would likely have given this book a five-star rating. However, while the author's passion and anger at the injustices perpetrated upon Carrie Buck are understandable and even noble, he does not control his emotions, and the book suffers as a result. In particular, his fury leads him to provide such massive digressions about the people he perceives to be evildoers -- up to and including Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes -- that he misses the point. HIs biographical screed about Justice Holmes takes up a full 10% of the book, and he provides similar biographical information about many of the other players; while I haven't calculated how much total space is occupied by these rants, I wouldn't be surprised if they amounted to 40 or even 50% of the book, leaving very little time to consider the human tragedy at the core of the book. In fact, his rage is so out of control that I was forced to wonder whether the facts were as bad as he paints. The book would have been far better and much more effective if he had let the facts speak for themselves instead of trying to analyze, psychologize and rationalize the behavior of the lawyers and others, including Justice Holmes, who forced Ms. Buck and so many others to undergo life-altering surgery and thus be deprived of their right to bear children without any meaningful due process.

From the vantage point of 2016 it is at one and the same time both strangely anachronistic and dismayingly pertinent to read Adam Cohen's meticulously researched and compellingly written book about the legal high point of the American eugenics movement. Anachronistic, because it is hard for many of us today to understand how so many leading (white) progressive reformers could have signed onto the cause of eugenics so enthusiastically at the same time they advocated for so many other causes that put them ahead of their time in terms of social reform. Margaret Sanger and other leading feminists, Teddy Roosevelt, leading clergy, lawyers, doctors and academics -- so many supported eugenics and, implicitly if not explicitly, the racist and classist pseudo-science that undergirded it. (As Cohen notes, the Nazi Party's eugenics program was explicitly modeled after the American movement.) It's so clearly not part of a progressive agenda we're used to that one can't help but wonder how these socially conscious forebears didn't see how brutal and tyrannical it was to a marginalized group of people. Saying that these reformers were in this instance captured by elitist, moralizing groupthink and ardor for government use of science to reform society doesn't wholly explain it.The book is pertinent for a number of reasons Cohen references, and for two reasons he couldn't have anticipated when he began it. First of the unanticipated developments is the particular way in which the Republican presidential primary and Donald Trump's ascendancy is buoyed by, and in turn contributes to the huge upswing of anti-immigrant, racist fear mongering. Mass immigration and social disruption (today, globalization and its discontents, and fear of terrorism) are threatening to large numbers of people, just as Cohen notes was the case when the eugenics movement arose. While there are many differences to be noted between that movement of a century ago on the one hand, and today's anti-immigration, anti-minority groundswell on the other, both cite repeatedly to "facts" that do not bear scrutiny and to nativist sentiment of one kind or another. The second development that gives this book even more relevance is the way in which Justice Scalia's death shines a renewed spotlight on the role the U.S. Supreme Court plays -- or abdicates -- when it comes to protecting the weak and powerless. As Cohen notes, the Court has far more consistently ruled in favor of powerful elites and against those who need the protection of our society and its laws most. Buck v. Bell, the case upholding -- on few facts, and most of them inaccurate -- the forced sterilization of a supposedly feebleminded woman, Carrie Buck, is far from the only case illustrating that proclivity. Examples continue to this day.It is gut wrenching to read how implacably the most powerful segments of society marched toward depriving a poor, uneducated but, as Cohen shows, perfectly intelligent young woman of her liberty, her dignity, her bodily integrity and her right to choose whether to bear children. And this was a woman who bore a child (the third generation of "imbeciles" in Justice Holmes' infamous term) because she was the victim of rape, not, as her "guardians" said, because she was a feebleminded "defective" who acted immorally due to inherited defectiveness. (The parallels to opponents of abortion who cite to the intention of "protecting" women's health by passing laws closing clinics come to mind.) These powerful forces close over Carrie so disproportionately, it is like watching a tsunami in slow motion, moving to obliterate her in so many ways. This is a book that would make a good addition to high school and college curricula. And an important read for all of us.
