Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of August 2018: While this autobiographically-inspired novel vividly summons the turmoil of 1990s Colombia, it’s more a story of private intimacies than national history. Nine-year-old Chula Santiago becomes obsessed with her family’s new housekeeper, Petrona, a 13-year-old of few words who lives far from Chula’s comfortable neighborhood. Chapters told from Petrona’s perspective offer a glimpse into a mirror-world of Bogotá where breakfast varies based on what soda she pours over stale bread for her many siblings. What starts as a lyrical domestic portrait turns increasingly tense as we’re forced to chart the collision course between two sweetnesses in Petrona’s life: her first boyfriend, and her growing closeness to the Santiago family. The civil war underway shimmers menacingly within the perspectives of both narrators: there’s an assassination, a car bombing at a mall, and of course the infamous Escobar manhunt that breathes a narco-haze over the country. There’s magical realism here, but it’s not García Márquez’s; it vines up from the distortions introduced by childhood: the naiveté, overheard adult conversations, the wildness of unsupervised outdoor play during the apagones (electricity rationing), and the lead blanket of first promises. --Katy Ball

NOW A NATIONAL BESTSELLER“A beautifully rendered novel of an Escobar-era Colombian childhood...You don’t need to have grown up in Bogota to be taken in by Contreras’s simple but memorable prose and absorbing storyline…I can’t help wondering what novels about Colombia 25 years from now will have to say about this current period. I can only hope they’ll be as sensitive and thoughtful as this one.” --THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW“One of the most dazzling and devastating novels I’ve read in a long time…An exquisitely intimate double portrait of two young women....Unforgettable...Readers of Fruit of the Drunken Tree will surely be transformed."--SAN FRANCSICO CHRONICLE   “Simultaneously propulsive and poetic, reminiscent of Isabel Allende...Fruit of the Drunken Tree offers a wake-up call for many. I’m traveling and would not usually choose a book like this to read since reading opportunities are irregular. But once I started, I couldn’t stop. Every possible chance I had, I fell back into the twinned stories of Chula and Petrona. Chula’s viewpoint is from 7 years old albeit recounted from an adult perspective. Her relatively privileged world is in black and white, her family and their servant, until tragedy fragments everything. It is Petrona’s Story that broke my heart. From the slums, Petrona must maintain a balancing act between earning money for her family, being loyalty to her employer, and dealing with the dangerous gang liaison that forces a terrible choice on her. Without beating you over the head, you're drawn into the uncertain and often brutal life that many in Colombia still face. One of the best social justice stories I’ve read.

Ingrid Rojas Contreras has written a compelling novel of Colombians caught in the crossfire of drug lords, militias, and government forces. She knows of what she writes, having lived through much of the storyline. Contreras has wisely chosen two first-person narrators for the story-- each a character representing a distinct socioeconomic class and sociopolitical reality. The reader benefits from these two points of view and the narrators' observations of how others (adult family members, primarily) experience this violent world.Contreras writes the narrators from the perspective of the events having taken place in the past, but told by journal entry or as if via an interview. This is a challenge because one of the narrators is so young. Perhaps she is as observant and reflective as her journaling suggests. This book is a page-turner. It's essential to read the afterword once finished with reading the story. It makes the story all the more powerful.

Wow I came across this book from listening to a local news station, the interview was amazing! As I'm driving i repeated the title over and over till I came to a stop sign, jotted down the title, waited for the release date then purchased it on Amazon, an amazing intriguing novel i literally read it in 2 days, there was never a dull moment I couldn't wait to find out what happens next! If your looking to get lost in a book affair this is a great opportunity! support Ingrid, a true talent at what she does!

I am an American expatriate living in Bogota, my husband a petroleum professional. This book was difficult to read, as for me, it hits a little too close to home. My husband is a Venezuelan-American whose innate paranoia has kept our family safe. We have no "muchachas" cleaning out apartment, and I am reticent even with our own security guards. Colombia, and Bogota in particular, is a very sad, serious place. I now realize that it remains stuck in the cycle of grief. But I am sure that in time, the beautiful things about my host country will emerge once more, its countless breathtaking landscapes, its lovely heritage. I recommend this book to anyone who knows the joy of reading, and it is with complete sincerity that I assure Ms. Rojas that she is in the company of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, demonstrated by the magical and musical way she turns a phrase, even in telling such a difficult tale. Bravo.

Set amidst the backdrop of tumultuous early 1990's Columbia, Contreras paints an intimate portrait of youth inexorably caught up in forces beyond their control. A largely ordinary Columbian family in Bogota hires a young girl, 13 year old Petrona, as a home helper. Petrona comes from the invasiones, the slums on the outskirts of the city, largely controlled by the Pablo Escobar's drug cartel. It is a world far removed from that of the Santiagos.Told through the alternating perspectives of Chula, the 9 year old youngest of two girls in the Santiago family, and Petrona, "Fruit of the Drunken Tree", is about the burgeoning friendship of Chula and Petrona as the violence of the drug world encroaches on the Santiago family and Petrona's first love with Gorrion, a boy from the invasiones, upends the dynamics between the two girls.Whether you know a lot about Columbia during the late '80s and early '90s or nothing at all, this is a remarkably intimate novel of family, friendship and loss. "Fruit of the Drunken Tree" is a stunning achievement.

Fruit of the Drunken Tree is an exceptional, majestic and captivating book. Oh, and the cover is stunning and simply out of this world! This is Contreras's debut novel, but I pray to the book spirits it is not her last. She weaves such a prolific story with intricate characters and gut-wrenching situations, which will remain with me for a long time. The novel takes place in Colombia during the violent drug lord years of the notorious Pablo Escobar. The story is narrated by seven-year-old Chula and the family's live-in maid, thirteen-year-old Petrona. Chula is a precocious girl who is extremely observant, curious, and wise beyond her years. On the other hand, Petrona is the sole breadwinner of her family, lives in poverty and has an incredibly difficult life. Despite their differences, Chula and Petrona develop an unusual, yet genuine friendship. I find myself recommending Fruit of the Drunken Tree because it is such a beautifully written novel (and based on Contreras's own life). Incredibly as amazing as this book is I would not have picked it up as quickly as I did if it weren't for my wonderful bookish Instagram friends, Lupita Reads and Spines & Vines. It is also the September book for the #ReadAcrossInstagram in collaboration with Lit on H St, Salt Water Reads, and #Words.Between.Worlds. If you would like to join the fun, there's still time!
