I have a book case full of books about famous sports figures. I'm pleased to add this one to that list. I found the beginning and the ending interesting. There is too much detail such as "first and ten on the 25 yard line" and "second and seven and we just managed a first down." That stuff gets a little old. However, the book is well written and pro football fans of yesteryear should enjoy reading it. I had to get through the bad memory that Shula's Dolphins beat my Chicago Bears to keep da' BEARs from going undefeated in the year they won the Super Bowl with only one loss. Shula's team is still the only undefeated team to win the Super Bowl undefeated. It was great to read what has happened to some of the star players on that great team. I have also dined at a couple of Shula's Steakhouse restaurants and can recommend that establishment as highly as I can the book.Norman Jones, Ed. D. Good book. Not as good as the Chuck Noll bio as they could've gone into his growing up years a little more. The A Football Life doc that's been on NFL Network covers pretty much everything that's in this book, but as a Dolphin/Shula fan it's worth buying.
Great read
Anything about Don Shula is interesting
I am a fan of Don Shula, and am thankful Carlo DeVito devoted much time to the research of this book. He read over 3000 articles, and many are meticulously noted in the appendix, which is a valuable resource in itself. However, I feel that the narrative reflected this research in an unflattering way, in that much of it feels like a bunch of newspaper clippings stitched together in a chronological fashion, with no real overarching narrative voice. So there is a distance, a remoteness that keeps the narrative a bit dry. I haven't read the entire book yet, but it does not appear that DeVito had any personal contact with Don Shula in creating this book. I think that would have helped, and maybe it's there but I haven't seen it yet. A better book, if you really want to know what is inside Shula, is his autobiography, The Winning Edge. However, that book ends with the Miami Super Bowl victories of oh-so-long-ago. This book provides a nice update on all those intervening years, but I feel I could get the same thing just by subscribing to newspapers.com and reading all the clippings myself. DeVito saves me a lot of time in an effort like that, but the jumping around through articles from paragraph to paragraph may make this a difficult read for me.
This is not Mr. DeVito's first famous NFL coach biography. Previously he had written a book entitled the "Unauthorized Biography of Bill Parcells ", the legendary coach of the New York Football Giants. Many of the same negative comments about that book are manifested in this work on Don Shula. Without going into minute detail , I would only recommend that you reference the 2-star review of that book to see the same errors of judgement inherent in this Don Shula biography.
