The pilot in the story is a friend of mine and I sure enjoyed reading about the author's experience.
This book was great! I laughed out loud at parts, learned a few things and loved the pictures. Clyman Otis is an author with amazing wit and wisdom. Check out his other "Adventure" series books as well. You won't regret it!

While I have traveled to the Far East many times, I have often dreamed of a journey to a South Pacific island paradise (you know, just like in the movies). Unfortunately, I was never afforded the opportunity. Being a ham radio operator, I had at least heard of YAP since I had talked to other hams in Micronesia. When I ran across "Adventures in YAP" I just had to read it! Clyman Otis, an Indiana Jones look alike (see the back cover), writes in a way that brings the whole adventure to life. I found that once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. Here is a guy dumped in the middle of a `South Pacific Paradise' with the same expectations I would have had and finds that things are not always as they seem to the outsider. The humorous nature of the book makes it easy, enjoyable and exciting reading. It certainly gave me a new perspective of life in a `South Pacific paradise'. Great Book (I've read it twice) and I am looking forward to reading about some of Clyman Otis's other travel adventures soon.
This is a absolutely delightful book. The author has a sense of humor that pulled the guffaws out of me many times in the reading of Adventures in Yap. A must read for any person who has ever traveled the Pacific or was ever curious about Island Life. While reading this book I felt as though I was in a conversation with Mr. Otis. Hilarious, raucous,funny and believable.
While many people have travelled to islands in the South Pacific, Clyman Otis has given us a window to a very different look at paradise. Living and working for several years on the remote island of Yap, Clyman somehow manages to keep his sense of humor through all the difficulties of culture shock, Pizza Hut withdrawal and learning to live and work with the Micronesians. It would be nice to hear more from Clyman. Perhaps further adventures, or what lasting impressions his time in Micronesia left on him. Fun to read, "Adventures in Yap" will alter your image of an island paradise.
The writer's humor of his experience on this small South Pacific island is a real treat. The island jumping in a small, local plane, the roaches taking up residence with him, his description of the rain and island lifestyle, and, well, there is much more. You'll enjoy the pictures and wish you were there. Oh, and there was the story of the betel-nut chewing, but I don't want to write about that. After reading the book, I asked a business acquaintance of mine if she had heard of Yap. She said yes. I was so surprised and amazed, I bought her lunch.
