Review
“This unique adventure tells how a young couple changed the course of their life from empty frustration to loving fulfillment. . . [Doss] tells her story with the friendly simplicity of a woman talking over a back fence.” —New York Times Book Review“Thoroughly joyous . . . It is impossible, in an appraisal of this length, to do justice to the true spirit of brotherly love and tolerance that pervades the book; similarly, to the genuine humor and pathos which are part of the story. The book will find many readers.”—Library Journal

I've had this book since middle school more than 30 years ago and I have read it so often the covers have fallen off & the tradebook paper is crumbling. As a young teen, I loved the story but didn't know enough to appreciate the writing. Now I am reading it aloud - to my three adopted daughters and my birth daughter - and we are laughing aloud and loving it together. It is SO COOL to be able to share this story with them. I have learned how differently adoption and fostering were back in the 1940s- 1950s from now. Now I am purchasing one for each of my daughters and another that I'll be able to read to myself later (or to my grandchildren one day) while I keep my original copy in a safe place. It is an easy read and its simplicity is deceptive. Metaphor, simile, alliteration, (and I'm sure other literary devices) make it so enjoyable - Helen Doss not only had the patience of a saint but the ability to communicate the love in her family with words that are a pleasure to read but also easily understandable by my special-needs 12yo. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!!
I first read this book when I was about 13 or 14. I love true stories, so this appealed to me. I enjoyed reading about this pastor's family who put their faith into action by adopting those children others might shun. Some of their brood had physical challenges, others were mixed race, etc. I ordered the book again because my daughter has my copy, and I still wanted it for my shelf. I started reading it to my granddaughters, ages 8 and 5. It's not Harry Potter, so their interest waned, but I'm sure they will enjoy it like I do when they are a little older. I think you will love reading a heartwarming story of family love and loyalty.
Just as I remember it! This non-fiction account of a family built by adoptions of children of multiple races was required reading for me in the 1970's. This is a timeless story of a family that did the right thing by adopting children because they needed homes. I found the simple lifestyle appealing and inspiring. Although some of the issues my family has faced as a result of adoption are not in this book, it was still a terrific conversation-starter for us and an enjoyable read-aloud. I read it to my 5 children, who ranged from 7-14 years old. They all loved it.
This book is a classic, and has been, since it was penned in the 1950's. I used to try to figure out which of their kids I was closest to, in age. (My best guess is Timmy, but I'm not sure.) I've given away - and read way beyond life expectancy - so many copies of this book!I bought a copy of the newer edition, eagerly awaiting the epilogue that tells a little more about the kids as they grew up. But sadly, the last few pages of my otherwise perfect copy is missing these pages. In any event, this is a lovely story, written with humor and love, way ahead of its time in terms of interracial understanding. I first read it in junior high, and I'm a grandmother now, and I've loved it all these years, so that must say something for its power to captivate!
I first found this book as a young girl and used my allowance to purchase it. I fell in love with the Doss family immediately, adoption has always been interesting to me as my younger brother came home with our family one day in June 1971, it still is one of my most favorite memories. I've read this many times over many years as I became a young mother and now blessed to be a grandmother of 11, through two paper back copies and now on kindle. This novel still brings joy when I read it again and I am very happy to have found it again.
I first read this book when I was a teenager. I fell in love with this family. I lost count of how many times I read this book. I loaned it to my aunt who loved it so much that she kept the book. When I was in my 40s, the Family Nobody Wanted was republished. I was thrilled and ordered it from Amazon. What was wonderful about this book is they added pictures of the children and Helen Doss added a chapter telling how the family turned out.I had planned on keeping this book as part of my permanent collection. However once again I loaned it out and didn't get it back. Lol.Finally Amazon published it for Kindle so I promptly bought it. Helen and Carl Doss were ahead of the times proving that no race is superior over another race. They also shows that unconditional love and respect is what children need to succeed in life. This is my all time favorite book. The only thing I am disappointed with the Kindle version is they didn't add the pictures that were in the book.
I had first encountered this book years ago when I was in middle school on a friends bookshelf. That copy had an orange cover and if picked it up based on the title alone. Little did I know then what a beautiful look into one couple's journey to become adoptive parents I would get. This became my introduction into the joys and difficulties of loving deliberately through adoption. The story moved me so much I did a book report on it at the time.I was elated to discover a new print and updated edition was available and promptly ordered a copy, along with one to share with a friend.
I first read this book as a child. I'd gotten a used copy, read it, feel in love with it, read it over and over again, then loaned it to a friend. Of course, it never came home. Several years later I happened to see a used copy for sale in the local newspaper. I had to have it, and it's still on my shelf twenty years later. As it turns out, I'm unable to have kids, so reading it again now may be a little harder, but finding it here tells me I have to. And I'm telling everyone else, too. It's a warm, funny story and just might remind some people what family, and acceptance, really means.
