Her scholarship over five years pays off with a rich account that is personal and concrete. She recounts Mary's early life as a privileged—but motherless—child, her ambitions for her husband, and her role as "first lady" (a term originally coined for her). Large and small details are juxtaposed with specifics about Lincoln and broadened by Mary's significance. For example, a political decision was made regarding her attendance at the debates; Lincoln wanted to preserve his "common man" image rather than show off his refined and educated wife. Unlike most biographies, which conclude with Lincoln's death, this one follows Mary's story to the end, detailing Robert Todd's role in her commitment to an insane asylum, Tad's death, and her own demise. I have a stack of books on the Lincolns, but Ms. Fleming's book is my favorite! It is so well done! The stories; the photos; the tidbits! I can hardly put the book down! Her stated goal is to leave us feeling we just visited old friends and she accomplishes this magnificently! This book is a must have! And it's one you can proudly display! How proud Abraham and Mary would be of this beautiful book on their extraordinary lives!
I enjoyed it and found it very intesting. Well illustrated with photos and has informative short articles accompanying each picture.
If you love history, you will enjoy this book. Each page is its own story so you can start and stop reading at any time.
My son's school library has this book and after looking through it for two weeks with my son we decided to buy our own copy as a gift. Well worth it. Photographs and information are organized in a great way for young readers to follow and absorb the information. I learned many new things and I have read several bios on Lincoln over the years. This book is a great addition to any family library.
